Streptocarpus sect. Saintpaulia ‘Snowdrop’ is a refined African Violet hybrid celebrated for its pristine white blossoms with a soft yellow throat. These delicate flowers rise on slender stems above a rosette of velvety, dark-green leaves, creating a clean and elegant contrast. Designed for indoor growing, ‘Snowdrop’ offers prolonged bloom cycles under stable conditions, making it a favorite for collectors and anyone seeking low-maintenance color year-round.
Bred from wild species of Tanzania’s cloud forests, this cultivar thrives in bright, filtered light and adapts well to artificial illumination, making it ideal for homes or small growing setups.
The ancestors of ‘Snowdrop’ grow in Tanzania’s Eastern Arc Mountains at altitudes of 800 – 1,500 m, where they cling to shaded rock crevices and thrive in constant humidity. These cloud forests offer diffused light, mild temperatures (18 – 24 °C), and excellent drainage from mossy, humus-rich substrates. This explains why ‘Snowdrop’ prefers gentle light, even moisture, and an airy potting mix indoors.
‘Snowdrop’ responds well to consistent care and occasional rejuvenation through propagation every 2 – 3 years. Its pure white blooms brighten any indoor space and pair beautifully with other miniature hybrids for a curated display. By mimicking its native habitat – soft light, steady warmth, and light, airy soil – you can maintain this plant for many years.
Streptocarpus means “twisted fruit” in Greek, referencing the spiraled seed capsules. Formerly classified under Saintpaulia, African violets were reassigned to Streptocarpus after genetic research confirmed their placement within this genus. The name ‘Snowdrop’ reflects its elegant white blooms, reminiscent of winter blossoms.
