Where Giant Bird of Paradise Comes From

Strelitzia nicolai is native to southeastern Africa, from eastern Zimbabwe and eastern Botswana south through Mozambique to KwaZulu-Natal. It grows in subtropical coastal forest, riverine vegetation and forest margins, where clumping trunks contribute to a tall, banana-like canopy.

Birds pollinate the boat-shaped flowers and also interact with the orange-arilled seeds. Older botanical names include Strelitzia alba subsp. nicolai and S. quensonii, now treated as synonyms. S. nicolai is a distinct giant species rather than a large form of S. reginae.

Care for broad-leaved tropical growth

Propagation, leaf care and feeding: Remove a fully dead or broken leaf by cutting its stalk near the base, leaving central spears untouched. Feed regularly at moderate strength while new leaves are extending in high light. Repot when roots begin displacing the mix or preventing normal watering, using a stable pot and preserving the root mass. Propagation is by seed or division of a well-established multi-shoot clump; a cut leaf or trunk section does not clone the plant.

Light and settling in: Give Strelitzia nicolai the brightest position available, including direct sun after gradual acclimatisation. Low light produces long, leaning petioles and makes flowering extremely unlikely.

Humidity and spacing: Average humidity is workable; physical space and light matter more than misting.

Root care and watering: Use a deep, substantial container filled with a loam-based mix that drains freely while retaining some moisture. Water thoroughly after the upper layers dry during active growth, then empty all standing water. Reduce irrigation in cool, dim winter conditions without leaving the large root system completely dry for long. Do not bury the rhizomatous crown or leave the pot standing in water inside a cover pot.

Mites leave fine pale speckling, bronzing, eggs or webbing beneath the huge leaves. Wash accessible surfaces and keep the plant apart while treatment follows the product label. Check the midrib, underside and leaf-stalk bases again as new leaves open, since one treatment may miss eggs.

Yellow collapse together with a soft root or stem base points to cold wet damage. Remove any rotten tissue, restore warmth and improve drainage. Scale and mealybugs hide deep between the leaf stalks and can be recognised by fixed covers or cottony wax. Long weak stalks and small new leaves usually mean the plant needs more light, not more fertiliser.

Parallel tears that follow the veins are normal on such a large blade and can form as the leaf moves or unfurls. They do not prove that humidity is too low. Flowering indoors may never occur because Strelitzia nicolai needs exceptional light, maturity and space. A healthy plant without flowers is not diseased.

Where does the name Strelitzia nicolai come from?

Strelitzia commemorates Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. The epithet nicolai commemorates Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaevich the Elder.

Joseph Banks established the genus Strelitzia in 1788 in Icones Strelitziae Reginae.

Eduard August von Regel and Friedrich August Körnicke first described Strelitzia nicolai in 1858 in Gartenflora, volume 7, page 265.
