Breeding and selection history of Spathiphyllum Diamond ('SP7018')

Diamond is the trade name for cultivar ‘SP7018’, bred by Wim A. J. Brouwer in Nootdorp, the Netherlands, from proprietary selections ‘6527’ × ‘6578’.

The cross was made in August 2013 and the cultivar was selected in September 2014. It may also be listed as ‘Brojedia’.

Keeping Spathiphyllum Diamond healthy

• Light: Choose bright indirect light to support both growth and the variegated pattern. Lower light is tolerated, but growth and flowering can slow. Protect the cream and white areas from strong direct sun.
• Water: Water when the surface has started to dry and the pot feels a little lighter, then drain it fully. Use the drying surface and lighter pot as the regular watering cue; severe wilting means the plant has become too dry.
• Humidity: Moderate to high humidity is useful because pale areas show dry-air damage more easily. Keep the plant away from strong, hot airflow from radiators or vents.
• Temperature: Keep it in warm, stable indoor conditions and away from cold draughts, air-conditioning outlets and direct heat.
• Potting mix: Use an airy mix that holds some moisture but still drains promptly. Bark, perlite or another chunky ingredient can improve drainage and leave more air around the roots.
• Feeding: Feed lightly and regularly while new leaves are forming, following the fertiliser label. Excess fertiliser can contribute to browned tips, especially where water is mineral-rich.
• Repotting: Repot when roots have clearly filled the container or water moves through the old mix too quickly. Move up only one pot size at a time.
• Flowering: If the plant is healthy and flowering has paused, improve the indirect light. Leaves with a high proportion of pale tissue have less green tissue, so low light can slow both growth and flowering.
• Grooming: Remove fully yellow or dead leaves and spent flower stalks. Leave healthy white leaf sections in place because they are part of the variegation.

Problems and solutions for Spathiphyllum Diamond

• White areas turn crisp or tan: Pale areas are more easily damaged by direct sun, dry air and repeated drought. Move the plant out of harsh light, water more consistently and improve humidity before trimming only the fully dead tissue.
• The whole plant droops: Test the mix first. Dry roots can make a peace lily collapse quickly, but a wet root ball with limp foliage suggests stressed or damaged roots rather than a need for more water.
