Spathiphyllum Diamond ('SP7018')

Breeding and selection history of Spathiphyllum Diamond ('SP7018')

Diamond is the trade name for cultivar ‘SP7018’, bred by Wim A. J. Brouwer in Nootdorp, the Netherlands, from proprietary selections ‘6527’ × ‘6578’.

The cross was made in August 2013 and the cultivar was selected in September 2014. It may also be listed as ‘Brojedia’.

Care for Spathiphyllum Diamond ('SP7018')

• Light: Choose bright indirect light to support both growth and the variegated pattern. Lower light is tolerated, but growth and flowering can slow. Protect the cream and white areas from strong direct sun.
• Humidity: Moderate to high humidity is useful because pale areas show dry-air damage more easily. Aim for 50–60% humidity and keep the plant away from strong, hot airflow from radiators or vents.
• Water: Water when the surface has started to dry and the pot feels a little lighter, then drain it fully. Use these cues to water before the plant wilts severely.
• Potting mix: Use an airy mix that holds some moisture but still drains promptly. Bark, perlite or another chunky ingredient can improve drainage and leave more air around the roots.
• Temperature: Keep temperatures around 18–24 °C. Avoid prolonged temperatures below 12 °C. Keep it in warm, stable indoor conditions and away from cold draughts, air-conditioning outlets and direct heat.
• Feeding: Use a light-to-moderate feed while new leaves are forming.
• Grooming: Remove fully yellow or dead leaves and spent flower stalks. Leave healthy white leaf sections in place because they are part of the variegation.
• Flowering: Good indirect light is particularly important for growth and flowering when much of the foliage is pale. If a healthy plant has stopped flowering in a dim position, improve the indirect light.
• Repotting: Move to the next pot size when roots have clearly filled the container. If water passes through the old mix unusually quickly, check whether the root ball is crowded or is not wetting evenly; refresh the mix if needed.
• Propagation: Divide the mature clump so every new section keeps healthy roots and an active shoot.

Problems and solutions for Spathiphyllum Diamond

• White areas turn crisp or tan: Pale areas are more easily damaged by direct sun, dry air and repeated drought. Move the plant out of harsh light, water more consistently and improve humidity before trimming only the fully dead tissue.
• The whole plant droops: Test the mix first. Dry roots can make a peace lily collapse quickly, but a wet root ball with limp foliage suggests stressed or damaged roots rather than a need for more water.
• Leaves yellow from the base: An occasional old leaf is normal. If several leaves turn yellow together, especially while the mix stays wet, check the drainage and roots. Use the yellow-leaf guide to compare patterns.
• Roots are dark and soft: Stop treating the plant as simply thirsty. Cut away rotten roots with clean, disinfected tools, discard the removed material and repot into fresh, freely draining mix. Follow the root-rot guide for step-by-step recovery advice.
• New leaves are scarred, silvered or misshapen: Look closely for thrips, mites and mealybugs around unfurling leaves and on the undersides. Isolate confirmed infestations, clean the foliage, then use a treatment labelled for the pest and repeat at the interval stated on the label. If the pest is uncertain, check the affected areas again and choose a treatment only after identifying it.

Spathiphyllum ‘Diamond’ is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

What does the name Spathiphyllum mean?

Spathiphyllum arose from Greek spathē, meaning a blade or spathe, and phyllon, leaf.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Spathiphyllum in 1832 in Meletemata Botanica, page 22.
