‘Little Love Blue’ is a cultivated selection from the African-violet group, Streptocarpus section Saintpaulia, whose wild species are native mainly to Kenya and Tanzania. They occur in humid coastal to montane forest, often on shaded rocks where shallow organic pockets drain freely.

Forest cover and elevation provide soft light, mild temperatures and regular moisture around roots that still receive air. Indoors, the compact rosette needs a small pot, even moisture and protection from harsh sun and sudden cold.

Gentle bright light for blue-violet flowers

Give bright, indirect light and protect the soft leaves from hot sun. Widely spaced leaves and few buds signal that the position is too dark.

Water with room-temperature water

Water when the surface has just dried. Apply water below the leaves or soak from the saucer, then let the pot drain. Keep the compact centre dry.

Fine compost in a modest pot

A light African-violet mix gives the fine roots both moisture and air. Keep the crown level with the surface and move up only one pot size when roots fill the container.

Warmth and regular light feeding

Keep conditions steady and avoid cold glass or drying heat. Use a weak fertiliser during visible growth and flowering, then rinse accumulated salts from the mix every few months.

The rosette opens and buds are scarce

The plant needs more gentle light, or the pot may hold too much damp compost. Move it closer to bright filtered light and check that the root ball fits the container.

Leaves stay limp after watering

Inspect the fine roots before adding more water. Soft brown roots need trimming and fresh airy mix. A dry, light root ball needs one thorough drink and full drainage.

The crown turns dark

Remove water from the centre and cut away soft tissue. Keep the crown above the mix and direct future watering below the foliage.

Tiny insects mark flowers or new leaves

Check for thrips around the blue-violet blooms and for cyclamen mites in the tight centre. Isolate the plant and repeat a suitable treatment.

Who first published Streptocarpus and Saintpaulia, and what do the names mean?

Streptocarpus means “twisted fruit”, referring to the spiralling seed capsule. Saintpaulia honours Walter von Saint Paul-Illaire, who collected the plant in what is now Tanzania.

John Lindley established the genus Streptocarpus in 1828 in Botanical Register, volume 14, plate 1173.

Hermann Wendland established the genus Saintpaulia in 1893 in Gartenflora, volume 42, page 321. Saintpaulia remains familiar in horticulture, but Kanae Nishii and nine coauthors placed it within Streptocarpus after a 2015 DNA study in Taxon, volume 64.
