East African forest habitats of African violets

‘Hovariagata’ is a cultivated African-violet selection and has no wild range of its own. It belongs to Streptocarpus section Saintpaulia, whose wild species are centred in Kenya and Tanzania.

Across the section, wild plants occupy humid coastal to montane forest, often on shaded rock faces or in shallow pockets of organic material. These habitats provide filtered light, mild temperatures and steady moisture around roots that still receive air. Indoors, protect the compact rosette from harsh sun, waterlogged compost and sudden cold.

Bright filtered light for variegated leaves

Place it in bright, indirect light. Hot sun can scorch the cream margins. A dark position opens the rosette and reduces flowering, so turn the pot occasionally to keep growth even.

Keep water out of the crown

Use room-temperature water when the surface feels just dry. Water from below or direct the flow beneath the leaves, then drain the saucer. Cold droplets can mark the soft foliage.

A small pot for fine roots

Use a light, well-aerated African-violet mix in a modest container. Set the crown at soil level and leave the central growing point uncovered.

Warm conditions and gentle feeding

Protect the plant from cold windows and hot radiators. Apply weak fertiliser during active leaf and flower growth, and flush the small pot periodically to remove salts.

When ‘Hovariagata’ African violet shows stress

Cream margins turn crisp and brown

Check for hot direct sun, a dry root ball or accumulated salts. Move the plant into filtered light, restore even moisture and flush the mix with plain water.

The centre becomes soft and dark

Water held in the crown or a buried growing point can start crown rot. Remove affected tissue, improve airflow around the mix and keep future irrigation beneath the leaves.

New leaves are distorted and crowded

Inspect the centre closely for cyclamen mites or thrips. Isolate the plant before treating because these pests spread readily between African violets.

Violet-blue flowers are scarce

Increase gentle light and check the pot size. An oversized container or heavy nitrogen feeding can produce leafy growth with few buds.

Streptocarpus and Saintpaulia: where the names come from

Streptocarpus means “twisted fruit”, referring to the spiralling seed capsule. Saintpaulia honours Walter von Saint Paul-Illaire, who collected the plant in what is now Tanzania.

John Lindley established the genus Streptocarpus in 1828 in Botanical Register, volume 14, plate 1173.

Hermann Wendland established the genus Saintpaulia in 1893 in Gartenflora, volume 42, page 321. Saintpaulia remains familiar in horticulture, but Kanae Nishii and nine coauthors placed it within Streptocarpus after a 2015 DNA study in Taxon, volume 64.
