Pumice – Long-lasting mineral for drainage, aeration and root strength
Pumice is a lightweight, porous volcanic rock that permanently improves drainage, aeration and structure in potting mixes. It never decomposes, so it keeps soil open and breathable for years – ideal for cacti, succulents, bonsai, aroids and other plants that dislike compact, soggy compost.
Why pumice is a staple for well-draining mixes
- Prevents compaction: keeps soil loose so roots can move through air gaps instead of dense, heavy compost.
- Enhances drainage: helps excess water escape quickly, reducing the risk of root rot.
- Balanced moisture: retains only a modest amount of water, so pots dry out in a controlled, predictable way.
- Extremely durable: particles do not break down, so structure stays stable over many seasons.
Where pumice works best
Use pumice whenever you want a mineral-rich, free-draining substrate. It is especially useful for cacti, succulents, bonsai, Mediterranean shrubs and arid-tolerant aroids, and as a key component in specialised mixes such as Lithops soil or bonsai substrates.
