Pumice – durable mineral structure for custom substrates
Pumice gives a substrate stable pore space without making it as light as a perlite-heavy mix. It is a good ingredient for growers who need structure that lasts.
What you’ll notice
- Porous mineral: holds small amounts of water inside hard granules
- Added weight: helps stabilise pots
- Long-term structure: breaks down slowly over time
- Reusable potential: can be cleaned and reused where appropriate
Watering behaviour
The granules hold some moisture internally while keeping the mix open. That makes pumice useful in succulent, bonsai, aroid and semi-mineral recipes.
When to blend it
A pure mineral pot is not right for every houseplant. Use coir, soil or bark where roots need more contact and nutrient-holding capacity.
How to use Pumice
- Stable structure: Adds long-term air pockets and weight to custom substrates.
- Drainage balance: Helps mixes drain without turning bone-dry immediately.
- Mixing: Combine with bark and a moisture buffer for most tropical plants.
Prep and handling for Pumice
- Rinse: A quick rinse removes fines so water moves evenly through the mix.
