Propagation Substrate Set – fine materials for cuttings and plugs

Propagation Substrate Set keeps the focus on root initiation and early establishment. It is intentionally less chunky than adult aroid, Hoya or succulent blends because young roots need reliable contact.

What you get

Seedling & Cutting Soil: forms the fine base for trays and small pots
Perlite: opens the medium without making it coarse
Vermiculite: helps moisture stay even around new roots
Temporary use: move plants on once roots fill the starter pot

Setup and use

Check roots before moving plants into a richer or more structured mix. Cuttings with only a few new roots still need a gentle transition, while well-rooted plugs can move into a plant-specific substrate sooner.

More information

The fine texture is useful at the start, but many mature plants will later need more structure, more mineral content or a chunkier bark fraction.

Use notes

This set is meant to make mixing easier. Use it as a full recipe or as a starting point you can adjust with extra mineral or organic components.

If you repot multiple plants, mix small batches first so you can tune the texture and drying rate to each pot and root system.

Pre-moisten dry components for a more even blend.
Keep leftovers sealed and dry between uses.
Match chunk size to pot size: smaller pots need finer structure.

This blend is for cuttings, seedlings, plugs and freshly rooted young plants. Keep the texture fine enough for small roots, but light enough that it does not sit dense and wet.

Start with: 4 parts Seedling & Cutting Soil, 1 part perlite and ½–1 part vermiculite.
For covered setups: Use ½ part vermiculite in humidity boxes, closed propagation trays, cooler rooms or places with limited airflow.
For faster-drying pots: Use closer to 1 part vermiculite in open pots, warmer spots or very small containers that dry quickly.

This is an early-growth medium, not a long-term substrate for mature plants. Once roots fill the small pot and growth is stable, move the plant into a mix that suits its mature growth habit.

No. It contains separate components so you can blend a fine, light medium for cuttings, seedlings, plugs and freshly rooted young plants.

What ratio should I start with?

Start with 4 parts Seedling & Cutting Soil, 1 part perlite and ½–1 part vermiculite. Use less vermiculite in covered or humid setups.

Can plants stay in this substrate long-term?

Usually not. Once roots are established and growth is stable, move the plant into a substrate suited to its mature growth habit.
