Polystichum luctuosum

Shaded subtropical habitats from southern Africa to East Asia

Polystichum luctuosum has a disjunct native range across Zimbabwe and southern Africa, islands of the western Indian Ocean, and from northern Pakistan through East Asia to Japan and Vietnam. It grows as a perennial terrestrial or rock-dwelling fern in the subtropical biome.

Its natural sites are sheltered from strong sun, with roots in humus or rock crevices that retain moisture and still admit air. Indoors, this fern needs filtered light, moderate temperatures, humid air and a moist mix that drains freely.

Bright shade without direct sun

Choose bright shade or filtered light. Direct hot sun burns the divided fronds. Deep indoor shade reduces new growth.

Moist roots with open drainage

Water as the surface begins to dry, aiming for an evenly moist root ball with air still reaching the roots. Let every watering drain freely and keep water from standing around the crown.

Humus-rich fern compost

Use a fine, organic mix loosened with bark or pumice. Keep the crown at the original level when repotting; burying it invites crown rot.

Cool conditions and humid air

Normal indoor temperatures suit this fern. Keep it away from hot, dry airflow. Remove only fully damaged fronds and feed at low strength as new curled fronds appear.

What may go wrong with Polystichum luctuosum

Crisp frond edges

The root ball may be drying too far or the air may be hot and dry. Re-wet evenly and move away from heaters; damaged leaflets will not recover.

A soft crown

Crown rot follows poor drainage, especially when the crown is buried. Remove decayed tissue, improve aeration and keep irrigation off the centre.

Pale, stretched fronds

Move to brighter shade and avoid heavy feeding. Ferns grown too dark or too rich produce weak growth.

Scale or mites

Inspect both sides of the fronds and along the central frond stem. Treat gently and repeatedly; harsh wiping easily damages divided foliage.

Polystichum luctuosum: name and meaning

Polystichum combines Greek words for “many” and “row”, referring to the rows of spore-producing sori on the underside of fertile fronds. Luctuosum is Latin for mournful or sombre, consistent with the fern’s dark foliage.

Albrecht Wilhelm Roth established the genus Polystichum in 1799 in Tentamen Florae Germanicae, volume 3, issue 1, pages 31 and 69.

Gustav Kunze first described it as Aspidium luctuosum in 1836 in Linnaea, volume 10, page 548. Thomas Moore later placed it in Polystichum as Polystichum luctuosum in 1858 in Index Fil, page 95.
