Pilea peperomioides is native to south-western Sichuan and western Yunnan in China. It grows as a low perennial among shaded, rocky mountain sites where water is available but drains away quickly. ‘White Splash’ therefore suits gentle filtered light, loose potting mix with pumice or similar coarse material, and watering after the upper layer begins to dry.

Light

Bright indirect light keeps ‘White Splash’ compact and helps the patterned leaves develop without scorching. A small amount of gentle morning sun can be introduced gradually, but strong midday or afternoon rays can burn the pale areas.

Water

Water when the upper part of the mix has dried, soaking the mix and letting the pot drain fully. Avoid keeping the pot soaked or letting the plant wilt badly.

Potting mix

Use an airy houseplant mix amended throughout with perlite, pumice or fine bark. Keep the fleshy stem at its original depth and use a pot with a drainage hole so the basal roots do not stay waterlogged.

Temperature and humidity

Average household humidity and temperatures around 18–24 °C suit this Pilea. Protect it from frost, cold window glass and direct radiator heat, which can mark the thin leaf margins.

Feeding and repotting

Apply dilute balanced feed while the plant is growing, taking care not to overfertilise a small root system. Repot when roots or pups fill the container, choosing a pot only one size larger.

Rosette shape and pups

Turn the pot by small amounts to keep the central stem from leaning hard toward one window, and remove only damaged or declining leaves. The white pattern is genetic. Bright filtered light keeps growth compact but does not make later leaves whiter.

Propagation

Separate a rooted basal pup with part of the underground stem attached, choosing a pup that already shows white markings. Stem sections may also root, but a single round leaf without a healthy stem joint will not recreate the plant.

Pups emerge plain green

Some pups may carry little or no white pattern. This does not mean the parent needs harsher light. If the splashed appearance matters, separate or remove persistently plain pups only after they have enough roots to establish independently.

White patches crisp and turn tan

The palest areas are easily damaged by hot direct sun or a dry mix. Filter intense rays and check moisture below the surface. Leave partly healthy leaves in place, trimming only dry brown areas if desired.

Several lower leaves yellow

One old lower leaf can fade normally. Multiple yellow leaves, especially with wet mix, suggest that the mix is staying waterlogged; let it dry farther, empty the cover pot and verify that drainage holes are clear.

The plant stretches toward the window

Long leaf stalks and a one-sided crown indicate weak or directional light. Move to brighter filtered light and turn the pot a quarter turn every week so new growth forms a more even rosette.

The stem base becomes soft and dark

A soft, dark stem base means rot. Cut above the damaged area into firm green stem, save healthy rooted pups and reroot the healthy top in fresh airy mix using a clean pot.

Aphids, mealybugs or mites appear

Inspect tender tips, points where the leaf stalks meet the stem and leaf undersides for clusters, white wax, stippling or webbing. Isolate the plant, rinse or wipe away visible pests and follow the product directions for the insect you find.

What does Pilea peperomioides mean, and who first published it?

Pilea alludes to a felt cap through Latin pileus, referring to the small cap-like flower structure over its dry fruit. Peperomioides means Peperomia-like and refers to round leaves carried on stalks fixed close to their centre.
