Phoenix roebelenii is native from Yunnan in southern China through northern Indochina, including Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam. It naturally grows close to rivers.

Wild plants grow on the banks of the Mekong and some tributaries, including river edges and cliffs that are exposed to flowing water.

Home care for Phoenix roebelenii

• Light: Give it bright indirect light with gentle direct sun. Provide shade from very hot midday sun through glass.
• Temperature: Keep it warm and stable. It grows well at around 15°C or warmer and should stay above 10°C. Keep it out of cold draughts.
• Water: Water moderately while it is growing as the surface begins to dry, then let excess water drain. Keep the mix around the roots lightly moist while new growth is developing and water less often when growth slows.
• Humidity: Moderate indoor humidity helps keep the fine leaflet tips in good condition.
• Growing mix: Use a peat-free, soil-based potting mix that drains well.
• Feeding: Use a complete palm fertiliser that includes potassium, magnesium and other essential nutrients, following the label directions.
• Frond care: Leave partly green older fronds in place and remove fronds only when they are fully brown and dry. Wear gloves around the sharp leaflets near the base of each frond.
• Repotting: Repot when the roots fill the container or the old mix starts draining slowly.

Palm health problems in Phoenix roebelenii

• Leaflet tips turn dry and brown while the rest of the frond remains evenly green: Dry roots, dry air or a draught are common causes. Check root moisture, water thoroughly if needed and move the palm away from strong drying airflow.
• The oldest fronds become yellow-orange toward the ends and develop brown leaflet tips: This pattern can point to low potassium. Use a complete palm fertiliser with potassium and magnesium, and leave partly green affected fronds in place while the plant recovers.
• Older fronds develop broad yellow margins while the centre remains green: This pattern can point to low magnesium. Use a complete palm fertiliser that includes magnesium and follow the label directions.
• Fine webbing and pale speckling, or brown shell-like bumps with sticky residue: Spider mites or scale are possible. Isolate the palm and confirm the pest. When treatment is necessary, choose a product that lists the confirmed pest for ornamental palms and follow its label instructions.
• New foliage stays pale while the mix around the roots remains wet for long periods: Roots that stay wet for too long may struggle to take up nutrients. Improve drainage, wait until the surface begins to dry before watering again, and resume normal feeding once fresh growth shows the roots are recovering.

Where does the name Phoenix roebelenii come from?

Phoenix comes from Greek phoinix, an ancient name for the date palm. The species epithet roebelenii honours German plant collector Carl Roebelen.

Carl Linnaeus established the genus Phoenix in 1753 in Species Plantarum, page 1188.

James O'Brien first described Phoenix roebelenii in 1889 in Gardeners’ Chronicle, series 3, volume 6, page 475.
