Philodendron ‘White Wizard’

Origin of Philodendron ‘White Wizard’

Philodendron ‘White Wizard’ is a horticultural cultivar known from cultivation. Its parentage and early introduction history are still uncertain.

Growing Philodendron ‘White Wizard’ indoors

• Add support once the stout stem extends: A pole, plank or trellis keeps the vine upright as the stem lengthens. Attach the stem loosely and leave new leaf stalks clear.
• Light: Use bright indirect light and increase exposure gradually after a move. White tissue can readily scorch or develop heat damage in strong light.
• Temperature and humidity: Keep temperatures around 18–29 °C, with prolonged cold below 15 °C avoided. Maintain roughly 50–60% humidity.
• Water only after the upper part of the root ball has dried: Water the root ball thoroughly and let the excess drain.
• Keep the potting mix coarse enough to stay open: Use a bark-based aroid potting mix and refresh it when the bark and other coarse material have broken down or the centre stays waterlogged despite normal conditions.
• Feed established new growth: While new growth is developing, apply complete houseplant fertiliser at a moderate rate; feed less once growth pauses.
• Repotting: Give ‘White Wizard’ a slightly larger container when roots have filled the current one. Keep the pole, plank or trellis secure and stabilise the pot as the vine grows.
• Take cuttings from healthy nodes: Select a firm section with at least one node and enough green tissue to support a new shoot.

Common problems and solutions for Philodendron ‘White Wizard’

• The amount of white changes between leaves: Variation is normal. Judge several nodes together; if the plant is firm and growing well, a change in pattern alone does not need treatment.
• White tissue turns tan or brown: Shade the plant from abrupt hot sun when exposure has changed. If the root ball is dry, rewet it completely; when salt deposits or recent heavy feeding point to excess salts, flush the mix and drain it well. Give future leaves more space if the damage follows rubbing.
• A shoot becomes persistently all green or almost all white: Follow the colour through more than one node. If a nearly white shoot weakens, cut back to a healthy node with green tissue. An all-green shoot can remain healthy when it is vigorous. Prune that greener section only if you prefer to keep more white pattern in the plant.
• Stippling, webbing or silver scars appear: Mites and thrips can both mark variegated leaves. Isolate the plant and check both leaf surfaces and the newest fold. Fine stippling or webbing calls for a houseplant product labelled for mites; silver scars with dark specks call for one labelled for thrips. Repeat treatment only as the selected label directs.
• Yellowing develops in a wet, heavy root ball: Allow the mix to begin drying and empty any standing water. If wilt or yellowing persists after that change, inspect the root system; leave every firm root in place, trim away soft decayed roots and renew substrate whose structure or drainage has failed. For major root loss, save a firm green-bearing node as propagation material and place it in fresh, clean potting mix to root. If decay has reached every remaining root and node, no healthy cutting remains; discard the plant.

Philodendron ‘White Wizard’ is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

How the name Philodendron came about

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.”

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Philodendron in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.
