Philodendron ‘White Knight’

Origin of Philodendron ‘White Knight’

Philodendron ‘White Knight’ is a named horticultural cultivar whose breeder, parentage and introduction history are still unclear.

Care for climbing Philodendron ‘White Knight’

• Climbing support: Add a pole, plank or trellis once the central stem starts lengthening. Attach the stem loosely so aerial roots can reach the support and new leaf stalks can move freely.
• Protect the white areas: Place the plant in bright filtered light and increase the light gradually after a move. Sudden hot sun can scorch white tissue before the surrounding green leaf shows damage.
• Temperature and leaf care: Aim for 18–29 °C, keeping the plant clear of prolonged chilling below 15 °C. Keep the growing point warm, away from cold glass and draughts, and give crowded foliage gentle air movement. Let wet leaves dry promptly after cleaning.
• Humidity: Keep moisture in the air around 50–60%.
• Watering: Feel below the surface and use pot weight as a second cue. When the upper part of the root ball has dried, water thoroughly, drain the pot and remove water from any outer container.
• Potting mix: Pot it in an open bark-based mix with gritty material mixed through it. Keep the mix open enough to drain quickly, with just enough moisture retention around the roots.
• Feeding: During active vine growth, give a restrained complete houseplant feed; then pause or reduce feeding when growth loses momentum.
• Repotting: Increase pot size slightly once roots crowd the container. Keep the climbing support secure and stabilise the pot as needed.
• Take cuttings from firm nodes: Choose a healthy stem section with a node and enough green tissue to sustain the new shoot.

Leaf and stem problems in Philodendron ‘White Knight’

• A white sector becomes crisp and brown: Move the plant away from hot direct sun if the mark followed stronger exposure. Rewet the root ball when it is actually dry; if salts are plausible from heavy feeding or visible deposits, flush the substrate and let it drain. Prevent repeat rubbing by giving pale leaf areas more clearance.
• A new leaf is much greener than the previous one: One greener leaf needs no action. Watch the next nodes; if an entire shoot continues green and you choose to remove it for appearance, cut back to a healthy node that still shows the cultivar’s pale stem pattern.
• Fine pests are difficult to see against the dark stem: Silver scars with black specks suggest thrips, while fine stippling or webbing points more towards mites. Isolate the vine and inspect rolled growth and leaf undersides. Use a houseplant product labelled for thrips when you find the first pattern, or one labelled for mites when you find the second, and follow its repeat interval.
• Several leaves yellow while the root ball remains wet: Skip the next watering and empty the saucer or cover pot. If the plant keeps declining as the mix begins to dry, inspect the roots; keep firm roots, remove soft decayed sections with clean tools, and replace dense substrate that no longer drains freely. Where severe root rot leaves only a small sound stem section, take a cutting that includes a healthy node and start it in new potting mix. If both the roots and all nodal stem tissue are soft or decayed, discard the plant.
• A brown mark remains damp or keeps enlarging: An advancing water-soaked or yellow-edged lesion needs separation from the rest of the collection. Keep the foliage dry, improve air movement and obtain a diagnosis before applying a disease-specific product.

Philodendron ‘White Knight’ is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

The meaning and history of Philodendron

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.”

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Philodendron in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.
