Philodendron ‘Thai Sunrise’

Cultivated origin of Philodendron ‘Thai Sunrise’

‘Thai Sunrise’ is a named horticultural Philodendron cultivar.

Growing Philodendron ‘Thai Sunrise’ indoors

• Support the lengthening stem: When it begins to lean or extend beyond the pot, add a pole, plank or trellis. Tie the stem loosely and leave the leaf stalks free.
• Protect the striped centre: Give bright, filtered or indirect light. After a move to a brighter position, increase exposure gradually so the pale centre is not hit by sudden hot sun.
• Temperature and humidity: Keep the plant between about 18 and 29 °C during normal growth, with protection from sustained temperatures below 15 °C. Humidity around 50–60% supports steady growth.
• Watering and checking the root ball: When the upper part of the mix has dried and the pot feels lighter, wet the whole root ball and let the excess drain. If very dry mix sheds water down the pot sides, apply water slowly in more than one pass until the centre has absorbed water.
• Potting mix and repotting: Use a loose, airy, bark-based aroid mix that drains freely and retains some moisture. Repot when roots crowd the container or the mix has broken down and drains poorly.
• Feeding: Apply your regular complete houseplant fertiliser while new leaves are forming. Reduce or pause feeding as growth slows and the mix takes longer to dry.
• Propagation: Take a healthy stem cutting with at least one node. For ‘Thai Sunrise’, choose a node with an aerial root when available, as it can shorten establishment time.

Changes and problems in Philodendron ‘Thai Sunrise’

• The stripe becomes wider, narrower or greener: Some leaf-to-leaf change is normal. Compare several leaves and nodes; if the stem is firm and growth remains healthy, no treatment is needed.
• New leaves stay small and the gaps between them lengthen: Check the stem attachment and light first. Re-secure a loose stem, and if the position is dim, increase filtered light gradually. If the next growth remains smaller despite good attachment, usable light and stable moisture, examine the root ball before feeding; leave firm roots alone and remove only genuinely decayed tissue.
• The pale centre turns dry and tan: If the plant recently met hot sun or heated glass, move it back from the exposure. If the pot is light and the root ball is dry, rewet it thoroughly. When a white mineral crust or recent heavy feeding makes salts plausible, flush the mix with clear water and drain it well. A fixed crease or rub mark will not heal, so give later leaves more clearance.
• Several leaves yellow while the mix remains wet: Stop watering for the moment, empty any collected water and clear the drainage route. If yellowing continues after the mix starts drying, slide the root ball out for a closer look. Keep firm roots, trim only dark soft or hollow roots with clean tools, and replace the substrate if it has become compacted or waterlogged. When decay has removed most roots, use any firm nodal stem section for a new cutting and establish it in unused free-draining mix. If every remaining node and root is soft or rotten, there is no sound material left to save; discard it.
• New growth opens with silver scars, dark specks or fine stippling: Thrips or mites are possible. Separate the plant from others and look closely at folded growth and leaf undersides. Remove pests you can reach. Silver scarring with black specks supports thrips treatment, while fine stippling or webbing supports mite treatment; use a houseplant product labelled for the confirmed pest and follow its stated repeat interval.

Philodendron ‘Thai Sunrise’ is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

Philodendron: name and meaning

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.”

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Philodendron in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.
