Philodendron ‘Pink Princess Marble’

Origin of Philodendron ‘Pink Princess Marble’

The variegated ‘Pink Princess Marble’ selection comes from cultivation and is outside a wild population.

Caring for Philodendron ‘Pink Princess Marble’

• Support: Train the upright stem onto a pole or board as nodes accumulate and guide flexible aerial roots towards the surface.
• Light: Keep the plant in bright filtered light so its green tissue can support the variegated vine, and protect broad pale areas from direct midday sun.
• Temperature and humidity: Keep temperatures close to 18–29 °C. Aim for 50–60% humidity.
• Watering: Water thoroughly after the upper mix begins to dry, then let the excess drain.
• Potting mix and repotting: Use a coarse aroid mix and increase pot size only when roots fill most of the current pot.
• Feeding: During active stem extension, use a light-to-moderate dose of complete fertiliser. As active growth tapers off, reduce the fertiliser rate.
• Handling: Leave soft new leaves alone until firm, then support the leaf from below when cleaning or moving the vine.
• Propagation: Take a healthy stem section with at least one node, ideally one that already carries an aerial root.

Problems and fixes for Philodendron ‘Pink Princess Marble’

• Large pale areas turn brown: Check the strongest light exposure and the moisture through the root ball. Filter the direct beam or move the plant farther from the glass when the damage faces the window; if the mix is dry through, rewet it fully and let it drain. The variegated-houseplant guide explains why low-chlorophyll tissue needs gentler conditions
• New growth has pale scars and black specks: Inspect the folding leaf for thrips. If you find them, isolate the plant, clean hardened foliage where practical and use an indoor thrips treatment according to its current label. Check the following leaf for new scarring
• A leaf has much less pink marbling: Lightly marked leaves can occur naturally. Follow the shoot across several nodes. If the plant remains healthy, no action is needed. If several successive nodes stay almost entirely green and you want to favour the marbled pattern, cut back to a healthy earlier node from a better-patterned section; replacement growth can still vary
• The vine wilts although the mix remains wet: Stop watering and check drainage. Persistent wilt calls for a root inspection. Retain healthy firm roots. If the mix has compacted, renew it and cut away only roots that are clearly soft or smell bad before repotting

Philodendron ‘Pink Princess Marble’ is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

Philodendron: name and meaning

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.”

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Philodendron in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.
