Philodendron ‘Paraiso Verde’

Cultivated origin of Philodendron ‘Paraiso Verde’

Mr Natalino is credited as the originator of ‘Paraiso Verde’, and Chandra G. Hendarto supplied the cultivar name. The cultivar is associated with Mr Natalino’s Paraiso Verde nursery in Belém.

Care for climbing Philodendron ‘Paraiso Verde’

• Support: Keep the climbing stem close to a tall pole or board so nodes and flexible aerial roots can make contact as the shoot lengthens.
• New growth: Keep the path in front of the newest leaf clear so the long soft leaf can unfold without rubbing or folding.
• Light: Provide bright filtered light and steady exposure; pattern contrast can still vary naturally between successive leaves.
• Temperature and humidity: Warm, stable conditions around 18–29 °C suit it; 15 °C is the lower limit for prolonged exposure. Maintain the surrounding air at about 50–60% humidity in normal indoor conditions. Pair this with light air movement around the leaves.
• Watering and mix: Water after slight drying at the surface, wetting the whole root zone. Use a coarse airy mix and let the excess drain.
• Feeding: During active vine growth, give complete houseplant fertiliser sparingly. Feed less frequently through periods of slower growth.
• Repotting: Repot when roots densely fill the container, moving up only slightly and keeping the climbing support stable. Stabilise the plant and support separately if needed.
• Propagation: Use a firm, healthy node-bearing cutting; pieces with an existing aerial root often establish readily.

When Philodendron ‘Paraiso Verde’ is not growing well

• Leaves become smaller along a long unsupported stem: Bring the stem back to a stable support and improve filtered light gradually if the position is dim. Judge the result from leaves produced after the nodes regain support
• Yellowing develops in substrate that stays wet: Extend the drying interval and check the container for slow drainage. If the plant also remains wilted, inspect the roots once. If you find damaged roots, cut back only the soft or bad-smelling sections and repot into fresh open mix; healthy firm roots should stay. The root-rot guide has the full reset procedure
• One leaf is much greener than the previous one: Pattern contrast can change naturally from leaf to leaf. Keep the care steady when the vine is otherwise growing strongly
• A dry bleached patch appears on a window-facing leaf: Filter a direct sunbeam or move the plant back from hot glass. Leave healthy tissue around the mark intact

Philodendron ‘Paraiso Verde’ is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

About the name Philodendron

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.”

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Philodendron in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.
