Philodendron ‘Painted Lady’ is closely linked to an unnamed Robert H. McColley hybrid from ‘Burgundy’ × ‘Emerald Queen’, patented in 1976. That plant was described with the same yellow-green mottling, vivid red stems and petioles, persistent red sheaths and climbing growth seen in ‘Painted Lady’.

The name ‘Painted Lady’ appears to have been applied later and does not appear in the 1976 patent itself.
