Philodendron ilsemanii

Botanical identity and natural origin of Philodendron ilsemanii

The origin of the variegated plant sold as P. ilsemanii remains unknown.

It is also unclear which wild species this cultivated plant is linked to, so its natural habitat and range remain uncertain.

Care for Philodendron ilsemanii

Keep the climbing stem securely supported. A firm plank or pole works well; leave the ties loose and give each large new leaf enough space to unfold.

Use bright indirect light without strong sun. The white and cream parts are more easily damaged, while the green areas provide most of the energy the plant needs for growth.

Temperature and humidity. Keep temperatures around 18–29 °C and protect the plant from prolonged conditions below 15 °C. Keep the plant at roughly 50–60% relative humidity. Keep air moving around new leaves and the base of the stem.

Water after the surface has dried. Check the pot first, water deeply and let all excess water drain. A coarse potting mix helps prevent the roots from staying wet.

Feeding routine: Keep feeding modest during active growth with houseplant fertiliser, scaling it back when new growth slows.

Repotting. Repot once the roots are crowded or the plant-and-support setup begins to lose stability.

Propagation. Use a healthy section of stem that includes a node. A cutting with an existing aerial root usually establishes more readily.

Changes to watch in Philodendron ilsemanii

• A run of leaves comes through completely green: Green growth can become more vigorous than the patterned part. If you want to keep the variegation, prune back to the last section that produced a clearly patterned leaf.
• New growth is almost completely cream or white: Keep healthy green foliage in place because the pale section produces little energy on its own. Watch whether the next leaf returns to a better balance.
• The light areas turn dry and brown: Harsh sun and an overly dry pot are the first things to check. Sun-side browning calls for a gentler position. If the pot had dried out much more than usual, bring the next watering forward a little.
• Fresh leaves show silver scars, dark specks or webbing: Look for thrips in new growth and mites under the leaves. Move it away from neighbouring plants while treating the pest you find.

Philodendron ilsemanii is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

How did the name change from Philodendron ilsemanii to Philodendron sagittifolium?

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.”

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Philodendron in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.

Henry Frederick Conrad Sander first described Philodendron ilsemanii in 1908 in Gardeners’ Chronicle, series 3, volume 43, page 257.

Kew’s World Checklist treats Philodendron ilsemanii as a synonym of Philodendron sagittifolium. Frederik Michael Liebmann first described Philodendron sagittifolium in 1849 in Videnskabelige Meddelelser fra den Naturhistoriske Forening i Kjøbenhavn, volume 1, page 17.
