Philodendron hederaceum ‘Lime’ (‘Neon’)

Identity and natural origin of Philodendron hederaceum ‘Lime’ (‘Neon’)

Where the cultivar sold as ‘Lime’ or ‘Neon’ first appeared is unknown. This bright form belongs to Philodendron hederaceum, which occurs naturally from Mexico through tropical America.

Wild plants live in humid tropical forest, climbing through trees and other vegetation and sometimes growing directly against tree trunks.

Caring for Philodendron hederaceum ‘Lime’ (‘Neon’)

Trailing or climbing. Let the stems hang freely, or guide the vine up a trellis or pole with loose ties around the stem.

Keep the colour bright with indirect light. A bright position gives fuller growth, while deep shade can leave long gaps between leaves. Strong direct sun may bleach or scorch the lime foliage.

Temperature and humidity. Temperatures of about 18–29 °C suit routine growth; extended cold below 15 °C should be avoided. Maintain the growing area near 50–60% humidity.

Water when the upper mix feels dry. Soak the pot, let it drain and wait longer in cooler or darker conditions when drying slows down.

Potting mix. Use a loose potting mix that lets excess water drain freely.

Feeding. Keep feeding modest while growth is active with houseplant fertiliser, scaling it back when new growth slows.

Repotting. Give the roots more room when they crowd the pot; also repot if the plant and its support become unstable.

Propagation. Take a healthy cutting from the plant through a stem section that includes a node. A node that already has an aerial root usually establishes more readily.

What changes mean on Philodendron hederaceum ‘Lime’

• Tan bleaching shows mainly on the window side: The plant is probably catching too much direct sun. Move the vine back or soften the strongest rays.
• Long bare gaps appear between leaves: A brighter indirect position usually helps. If the vine is climbing, also make sure the stem is actually secured to its support.
• Yellowing starts while the container stays wet: Let the mix dry further and empty any pooled water. Replace the mix if it has become dense and slow to drain.
• Fine webs, pale dots or silver streaks appear: Check underneath for mites and look at tender new growth for thrips. Move the vine away from other plants while treating the problem.

Philodendron hederaceum ‘Lime’ (‘Neon’) is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

Who first published Philodendron hederaceum, and what does the name mean?

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.” Hederaceum is Latin for ivy-like and refers to the plant’s trailing and climbing habit.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Philodendron in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.

Nicolaus Joseph von Jacquin first described it as Arum hederaceum in 1760 in Enumeratio Systematica Plantarum, page 31. Heinrich Wilhelm Schott later placed it in Philodendron as Philodendron hederaceum in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.
