• Propagation: Divide a rhizome section with a living bud and roots, choosing one that includes enough green tissue as well as variegated areas. Entirely white growth cannot survive on its own for long.
• Humidity and airflow: New variegated leaves open more evenly in moderate to high humidity. Maintain airflow around the velvet foliage and the rhizome at the surface.

• Decay in a variegated rhizome: A buried or saturated horizontal stem can soften and smell unpleasant. Remove rotten tissue with a clean blade, keep the remaining rhizome at the surface and renew dense mix.
• Variation between successive leaves: Cream, yellow, mint and green areas can vary naturally between leaves. A stable colour boundary is normal; soft wet tissue, expanding lesions or sudden collapse are not expressions of variegation.
• Brown pale tissue: Sun, drought, cold, fertiliser salts and damaged roots can all brown pale sectors first. Check exposure, the full root zone and the horizontal stem before changing several conditions at once.
• Too little green: An entirely pale shoot has little capacity to support continued growth. Keep healthy growth with useful green tissue; when dividing the rhizome, include a living bud and sound roots, and expect the next shoot's pattern to vary.
• Velvet pests: Thrips scar rolled new leaves and leave black specks; mites make fine stippling on hardened leaves. Separate the plant and confirm the pest with magnification. Try the intended indoor-plant control on a small area before applying it across the velvet.
• Crisp edges on pale tissue: Pale margins can crisp after uneven watering or salt build-up even when green tissue looks sound. Restore steady moisture and flush the mix if fertiliser residue is likely.

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.” Gloriosum comes from Latin and means glorious or splendid.
