Philodendron ‘Florida Bronze’

Origin of Philodendron ‘Florida Bronze’

Philodendron ‘Florida Bronze’ is an established cultivated Florida-type selection. Its exact pedigree and early horticultural history remain uncertain.

Caring for Philodendron ‘Florida Bronze’

• Support and aerial roots: Give the climbing stem a stable vertical support and guide aerial roots into contact with it without forcing them.
• Light: Place it in diffused light and shield the foliage from harsh direct sun. Brighter exposure should be introduced gradually.
• Water and substrate: Use an airy, moisture-buffering mix that drains well and leaves oxygen around the roots. Allow part of it to dry, then soak it thoroughly and let all excess water drain.
• Warmth and airflow: Maintain stable warmth with good airflow. Avoid cold, wet conditions around the roots and stem.
• Feeding: Feed modestly during active growth according to the product instructions.
• Propagation: Use a healthy stem section with at least one node.

Understanding changes in Philodendron ‘Florida Bronze’

• Bronze or copper leaf turns green: The whole leaf naturally changes from bronze or copper to green as it hardens. Let it mature without treatment.
• New foliage looks less bronze than before: Colour can vary with leaf age, light and overall condition. Let a newly emerged leaf harden before judging its final tone. If growth is also stretched, improve diffused light gradually and keep the plant away from harsh direct sun.
• Internodes stay long and leaves remain small or simple: Juvenile growth can be simple. On an established plant, improve filtered light gradually if the position is dim, secure the stem to a support and assess later growth.
• Leaves yellow and wilt while the root ball stays wet: Pause watering and check drainage. Ongoing wilt or yellowing while the root ball is wet calls for a root inspection. If the roots are firm and drainage is sound, wait for the upper mix to reach the usual dry cue before watering again. Repot firm roots if the medium has collapsed or drains slowly. When rot is confirmed, remove dark, soft roots before repotting the remaining firm roots in clean airy mix. If the stem base is soft or no firm roots remain, salvage only a firm healthy node above the damage. Discard the affected plant if no sound node remains.
• An exposed patch becomes bleached or crisp: A dry bleached area after stronger exposure is consistent with sun or heat injury. Return the plant to filtered light and acclimate it more gradually. If the patch is wet, soft or expanding, isolate the plant and obtain a diagnosis.
• New leaves are scarred or distorted, or show stippling, webbing, cottony material or shells: Localised scarring, distortion, stippling, webbing, cottony material or shells can indicate pests. Isolate the plant, confirm whether thrips, mites, mealybugs or scale are present, clean or remove them where practical and use a treatment labelled for the identified pest.
• A healthy young plant produces one simple leaf: Continue consistent care and support, then evaluate the sequence of new leaves. Simple juvenile foliage can occur before the mature divisions develop.

Philodendron ‘Florida Bronze’ is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

Philodendron: where the name comes from

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.”

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Philodendron in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.
