The original non-variegated ‘Black Cardinal’ was selected in Cora McColley’s Florida breeding programme and patented in 1984. It is a compact, self-heading hybrid with broad, thick leaves that open brick red and mature to dark red or near-black.

• An overwhelmingly pale shoot loses vigour: Keep the healthy growth that carries green tissue and do not add extra fertiliser. Prune only if the decline continues and a viable greener or patterned bud is available; the next growth pattern cannot be predicted.
• Leaves yellow or droop while the pot stays wet: Check moisture deeper in the root zone and inspect the roots for softness or an unpleasant odour. Remove only tissue that is confirmed dead, improve aeration and drainage, and allow part of the root ball to dry before watering again.
• Tight growth develops silvering, dark specks and repeated distortion: Check rolled leaves, petiole bases and both leaf surfaces to confirm thrips. Isolate the plant, rinse away insects you can reach, remove badly affected material when proportionate and recheck the protected growth. Sticky cards can monitor adults but will not control the infestation. If treatment is needed, use only an indoor product labelled for both the plant and thrips, following the label exactly.
