Origin of Philodendron billietiae variegata

Philodendron billietiae variegata is the cultivated variegated version of P. billietiae. Its precise origin in cultivation is not known.

Green P. billietiae grows naturally in Guyana, French Guiana and Pará in northern Brazil. In warm rainforest it climbs closely against trees and can also grow over rock.

• Protect the pale areas from strong sun: Keep the plant somewhere bright, but shield cream and yellow sections from hot direct light.
• Water after part of the mix has dried: Soak the pot thoroughly when the upper layer feels dry and the pot is lighter, then let all excess water drain away.
• Support the stem and free the long leaf stalks: Keep the vine close to a stable pole or board but leave the foliage room to move and spread.
• Use an airy potting mix: Choose a coarse mix that drains well without drying instantly, and replace it if it breaks down and begins to stay wet for too long.
• Keep feeding simple: Fertilise during periods of fresh growth. More feed will not turn cream or yellow sections green.

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.” The Latinized epithet billietiae means “of Billiet” and honours Frieda Billiet of the National Botanic Garden of Belgium.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Philodendron in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.
