Peperomia pseudovariegata var. sarcophylla is native from Colombia to Ecuador, where it grows in wet tropical vegetation.

Care for Peperomia pseudovariegata var. sarcophylla

Allow the upper third of the potting mix to dry before watering. Water evenly, let the pot drain thoroughly and wait until it feels lighter before watering again.

• Light: Use bright filtered light with gentle morning sun after acclimatisation. Strong midday rays can leave pale dry marks, and bends remain visible on the thick leaves.
• Potting mix: Use small bark, coco fibre and perlite or pumice. The mix should drain freely while retaining a little moisture between waterings.
• Temperature and humidity: Maintain 18–27 °C with moderate to high humidity and steady gentle airflow. Protect the plant from cold water, cold windows and closed humid conditions around wet leaves.

Remove damaged leaves with clean scissors and turn the pot for even growth. Feed sparingly while new leaves are unfolding, then pause when active growth slows.

Repot when roots fill the pot, keep the plant at the same depth and use only a modestly larger container.

Troubleshooting Peperomia pseudovariegata var. sarcophylla

• The stem base is soft and the leaves look dull: The roots may be short of air because the potting mix is too wet or compact. Remove affected tissue, repot firm growth into a looser blend and wait until the upper part of the mix has dried before watering again.
• Corky marks or blisters are forming: Oedema is a likely cause. It appears when a wet root ball continues supplying more water than the leaves can release. Increase warmth and airflow, keep the pot out of standing water and leave a longer gap between waterings.
• Pale dry patches are appearing: Strong direct sun or a rapid change in exposure may have damaged the glossy leaves. Move the plant back into filtered light and acclimatise new growth more slowly.
• New leaves are smaller and the upright growth is leaning: The plant may need stronger diffused light. Increase brightness gradually and avoid heavy feeding, which can create soft growth.
• Mealybugs are hiding around the leaf stalks: Isolate the plant and inspect the deep junctions carefully. Remove visible insects, clean the leaves and repeat treatment as new generations emerge.
