Peperomia ferreyrae 'Happy Bean' ('Nevada')

A Species from Northern Peru

Peperomia ferreyrae is native to northern Peru and grows in the country’s wet tropical vegetation. Its botanical history reaches back to a 1950 collection made near Campamento Ingenio in Utcubamba, Amazonas.

Growing a foliage plant indoors

• Light: Bright, indirect light suits Peperomia ‘Happy Bean’. Its narrow, bean-shaped leaves can take a little mild morning sun after gradual acclimatisation, while strong midday or afternoon sun may scorch them.
• Water: Water the root ball thoroughly, then allow the substrate to become almost or fully dry. Firm leaves indicate stored water; do not water solely by the calendar.
• Substrate and pot: Use a mineral-rich, fast-draining mix based on pumice, perlite or similar material, with a smaller amount of fine organic substrate. Keep the roots in a snug container with an unobstructed drainage hole.
• Humidity: It does not need high humidity and grows best with moving air.
• Feeding: Apply a weak fertiliser sparingly while new stems are extending. Withhold fertiliser while the plant is inactive.

When Peperomia ferreyrae 'Happy Bean' ('Nevada') needs attention

• Brown spots develop grey fuzzy growth: Keep the foliage dry and set the plant apart while fresh fuzzy growth or spots are appearing. Remove affected leaves with a clean tool, improve gentle airflow and check that the stem beneath each removed leaf remains firm.
• Wet-looking brown tissue enters a leaf axil: Cut back only to completely firm tissue with a clean tool and keep the wound dry. Inspect the root ball and correct prolonged wetness before normal watering resumes.
• Soft, yellow or fully translucent leaves: Inspect the root ball and lower stem for excess moisture and decay. Keep only firm tissue after a small, local problem. If wet-looking decay is spreading, isolate the plant; repotting alone will not stop it.
• Wrinkled bean-shaped leaves: Water deeply if the pot is dry and roots are healthy. If the mix is damp, inspect for root loss before adding more water.
• Stems leaning with wide leaf spacing: Increase light gradually and acclimatise the plant to gentle direct sun. New growth should become sturdier, while old elongated stems remain stretched.
• Dry bleached or black local patches: Check if the patch appeared after sudden sun, contact with hot or cold glass, handling or spray droplets. It should stop expanding once that cause is removed. If a wet-looking patch keeps expanding, isolate the plant and check it for disease.
• White wax at leaf bases: Inspect for mealybugs on the leaves and stems and remove visible insects. Follow an indoor-use treatment label that names mealybugs and continue checking the narrow leaf bases.
• White wax within the root ball: Confirm live root mealybugs along the roots before treating. Isolate the plant, discard infested substrate, clean the container and use a product only if its label allows use in the potting mix.

• This plant is non-toxic to people, cats and dogs.
• Chewing a large amount can still cause an upset stomach.

Peperomia ferreyrae: name and meaning

Peperomia combines Greek peperi, “pepper”, with homoios, “resembling”, and means “pepper-like”. The species name ferreyrae honours Ramón Alejandro Ferreyra Huerta.
