Peperomia dolabriformis 'Fire Sparks' is an architectural houseplant with upright, woody stems and fleshy, pod-like leaves that glow with translucent green and soft red edges. Native to South America, this slow-growing succulent-type species is compact, low-effort, and ideal for small urban spaces. Its shrubby shape and textured foliage give it the nickname âPrayer Pepperâ â a reference to the upright, folded leaf form resembling hands in prayer.
Taxonomy: Peperomia dolabriformis Kunth, published in Nova Genera et Species Plantarum 1: 60, plate 4 (1815), family Piperaceae.
Native Habitat: Found in the dry forest regions of Ecuador and Peru, often growing on rocky slopes or well-drained soils under filtered light. Its succulent adaptation makes it well-suited to drought-prone microhabitats.
The genus name Peperomia comes from Greek, combining âpeperiâ (pepper) and âhomoiosâ (similar), due to its close relationship to black pepper (Piper nigrum). The species name dolabriformis means âhatchet-shapedâ, referring to the distinctive leaf form. The cultivar name âFire Sparksâ alludes to the reddish edge highlights seen under strong light. âPrayer Pepperâ is an informal name based on the leaf posture and genus association with peppers.
Want a sculptural, low-maintenance plant with character? Add Peperomia dolabriformis 'Fire Sparks' to your collection and enjoy the curious charm of the prayer pepper â perfect for compact, sunny corners!
