Peperomia 'Sunrise' is a patented cultivar introduced in 2013 by breeder Obed Jacob Smit for the Eden Collection. Originating from the self-pollination of an unnamed hybrid, this compact plant stands out with its dramatic color contrasts. Grey-green, rippled leaves with green venation shimmer above, while the undersides glow pink-red, echoed by its petioles and peduncles.
This cultivar forms a neat, compact clump, usually no taller than 15 cm. The heart-shaped leaves are deeply ridged, adding texture that enhances the play between silver-grey tops and red undersides. Even in small pots, 'Sunrise' offers bold color impact, making it a favorite for collectors and decorative displays.
'Sunrise' was developed in 2013 through self-pollination of an unnamed Peperomia hybrid. Dutch breeder Obed Jacob Smit patented the plant and introduced it to the ornamental trade under the Eden Collection. Its vivid bicolored foliage and compact habit made it an instant hit in the Peperomia group.
Overwatering is the main risk, leading to root and stem rot. In low light, the red coloration may fade, while harsh direct sun can scorch the delicate leaves. Wrinkling indicates drought stress or very dry air.
Thanks to its compact size, 'Sunrise' works well in decorative containers or terrariums. The contrast between its silver-grey tops and red undersides makes it particularly striking when placed at eye level or in grouped displays. It rarely needs repotting, preferring snug pots.
The genus name Peperomia was coined by Spanish botanists Hipólito Ruiz López and José Antonio Pavón Jiménez in 1794 after their expeditions in Peru and Chile. Derived from Greek peperi (“pepper”) and homoios (“resembling”), it references its relationship to black pepper (Piper nigrum).
With its compact growth and bold color contrasts, Peperomia 'Sunrise' is a collector’s gem that thrives with minimal care. Order now and add this patented Eden Collection cultivar to your home.
