Origin of Peperomia quadrangularis 'Rocca Scuro'

Peperomia quadrangularis is native to parts of tropical America, where it grows on trees and rocks in wet tropical habitats.

'Rocca Scuro' is the name used for this especially dark, brightly striped form.

• Light: Enough bright indirect light keeps the lime bands distinct and the leaves close together along the stem. Introduce stronger light gradually.

What does the name Peperomia quadrangularis mean?

Peperomia combines Greek peperi, “pepper”, with homoios, “resembling”, and means “pepper-like”. Quadrangularis means four-angled and refers to the plant's angular stems.

Hipólito Ruiz López and José Antonio Pavon established the genus Peperomia in 1794 in Flora Peruvianae et Chilensis Prodromus, page 8.

John Vaughan Thompson first described it as Piper quadrangulare in 1808 in Transactions of the Linnean Society of London, volume 9, page 202. Albert Gottfried Dietrich later placed it in Peperomia as Peperomia quadrangularis in 1831 in Species Plantarum, sixth edition, volume 1, page 169.
