Peperomia quadrangularis ‘Rocca Scuro’

A trailing selection of a tropical American species

Peperomia quadrangularis ‘Rocca Scuro’ is a cultivated dark-striped selection of Peperomia quadrangularis.

The species is native across tropical America, where it grows as an epiphyte or lithophyte in wet tropical vegetation, rooting into organic pockets on trees and rocks.

Care for Peperomia quadrangularis ‘Rocca Scuro’

Pinch long stems to encourage branching or allow them to trail. Place rooted tip cuttings around the centre if it becomes sparse, taking care not to snap the angular stems.

• Watering: Wait until the upper 2–3 cm has dried, then water thoroughly and let the pot drain freely. Compact mix that stays wet quickly weakens the roots.
• Light: Use bright indirect light with a little gentle early sun. Hot direct sun can crisp the small leaves, while insufficient light creates wider gaps between them.
• Shallow hanging pot: Use small bark, coco fibre and pumice or perlite. A shallow pot suits the spreading roots and helps the centre dry at a similar rate to the edges.

Maintain 18–27 °C with moderate humidity and moving air. Keep the vines away from cold glass and closed damp conditions.

Feed at low strength while the stems are extending and pause when active growth slows. Repot after the roots have filled their current container.

Troubleshooting Peperomia quadrangularis ‘Rocca Scuro’

Stems are rotting at the pot surface: The centre may be staying wet in a deep or compact pot. Cut back to firm sections, root healthy tips and rebuild the plant in a shallow airy mix.

The gaps between leaves are long and the new blades are small: The trailing stems may need stronger filtered light. Increase brightness gradually and pinch the longest vines to encourage branching. If entire leaves become pale or dry, reduce direct sun exposure.

• The leaf tips are crisp: A severely dry pot, hot draught or contact with cold glass can damage the fine growth quickly. Correct the exposure and rehydrate evenly without leaving the roots saturated.
• Pests are hiding along the angular stems: Mealybugs and mites can shelter where the leaves meet the stems. Isolate the plant, wipe or rinse the vines carefully and recheck after each treatment until fresh growth remains free of pests.

What does the name Peperomia quadrangularis mean?

Peperomia combines Greek peperi, “pepper”, with homoios, “resembling”, and means “pepper-like”. Quadrangularis means four-angled and refers to the plant's angular stems.

John Vaughan Thompson first described it as Piper quadrangulare in 1808 in Transactions of the Linnean Society of London, volume 9, page 202. Albert Gottfried Dietrich later placed it in Peperomia as Peperomia quadrangularis in 1831 in Species Plantarum, sixth edition, volume 1, page 169.
