Passiflora boenderi is a Costa Rican species prized mainly for foliage: velvety bilobed leaves with purple undersides and bright yellow spotting on the upper surface that mimics butterfly eggs. That pattern is more than decoration, because it is associated with deterrence of further egg laying by some butterflies, turning the plant into a vivid example of plant–insect interaction as well as an ornamental vine.
It climbs readily with support and suits bright indirect light or dappled sun, steady moisture in a loose draining substrate, and warm humid conditions above about 10 °C. Flowers are small and greenish rather than showy, so the plant is usually grown for leaf character rather than floral impact. For collectors, it offers rarity, texture, and a documented defensive strategy.
