Native habitat and the braided form

Pachira aquatica is native from Mexico through Central America into tropical South America. Wild trees occupy periodically flooded riverbanks, estuarine margins, swamps and other low wet ground within the wet tropics.

Large night-opening flowers are visited by bats and moths, with bees and other visitors also using them after dawn. Pollinated flowers develop into woody capsules that split to release large seeds.

The familiar braided “money tree” is a horticultural production form made by training several young stems together, not a natural trunk structure. Another species, Pachira glabra, is also sold under the money-tree name, so the common name does not always identify a single species.

Growing a container tree or shrub

Water: Water thoroughly after the upper portion of the root ball has dried, then allow all excess to escape. Do not let the entire pot remain dry for long, but never keep it permanently saturated. Its ability to grow beside flooded rivers does not remove a container root system’s need for oxygen.

Braided plants: Inspect inside a braid and beneath any ties. Loosen or remove a tie before it cuts into expanding stems, and remember that several braided stems may have separate root systems. A declining stem can be removed without assuming the whole planting has failed. Stable warmth, filtered bright light and a consistent wet-to-partly-dry rhythm are preferable to immediate pruning, strong feeding or repotting.

Light: Place Pachira aquatica in bright filtered light, with gentle direct sun after acclimation. It tolerates lower light, but growth becomes slower, more open and less sturdy. Avoid abrupt moves from protected conditions into strong sun.

Soil and climate: Use a coarse, structurally stable mix that holds some moisture while maintaining open air spaces. Warm, steady conditions and moderate humidity support new leaf expansion. Protect the plant from chilling, cold draughts and sudden large changes in light or temperature.

Pruning and propagation: Prune above a node to control height or encourage branching while the plant is growing strongly. Stem cuttings and air layers can be rooted. Fresh seed is more reliable than stored seed and produces an unbraided seedling rather than the trained commercial form.

What to watch for with Pachira aquatica

• Dots and scars on stems: Regular small breathing pores, called lenticels, and old leaf scars are part of a healthy stem. Scale insects form irregular removable bumps and may produce sticky honeydew or black sooty growth. Look closely at apparent marks before treating them as scale.
• Brown leaflet tips: Tip browning can follow severe drying, fertiliser salts, damaged roots or dry air. Check the whole root ball, drainage and recent feeding; no single tip pattern identifies the cause by itself.
• A sparse crown: Long gaps between leaves and weak extension indicate insufficient light. Increase bright filtered light gradually, then prune only after healthy roots and renewed growth are confirmed.
• Pale tan patches: Dry bleached areas on the most exposed leaf surfaces indicate sun injury after an abrupt change. Reduce harsh direct exposure and reacclimate the plant; damaged patches will not turn green again.
• Wilt with dry or wet roots: Limp or crisp foliage above a dry root ball supports thirst. Wilting or yellowing while the pot remains wet, especially with dark roots or a soft stem base, indicates root dysfunction. Check moisture below the surface before watering.
• One declining braided stem: Several plants may be trained together in one braid. A tight tie can constrict an expanding stem, and one root system can fail independently. Loosen any tie that is biting into the bark and inspect the base of the affected stem without assuming the whole planting is lost.
• Mites and waxy pests: Fine stippling or webbing indicates mites; cotton at nodes or roots indicates mealybugs; fixed bumps and honeydew indicate scale. Separate the plant, identify the pest and include petiole bases and braid gaps in treatment.
