Nephrolepis exaltata 'Vitale' is a Boston sword fern with bright green, gently arching fronds and a dense, bushy outline. It has the fine frond texture of Nephrolepis exaltata in a manageable indoor size, with fronds that can curve from shelves, plant stands and raised displays.
Like other Boston ferns, 'Vitale' grows from a rhizomatous base that sends up fresh fronds in flushes. Each frond carries many narrow pinnae, creating a fine green surface that looks soft but still needs consistent moisture to stay crisp and even.
Nephrolepis exaltata is an accepted fern species in Nephrolepidaceae. It is native to tropical and subtropical America and is naturally associated with humid, shaded growing conditions. The species can grow epiphytically, so its roots perform best in an open, moisture-retentive mix with good airflow.
'Vitale' produces a full fern shape in indoor cultivation, with new fronds rising from the centre as older outer fronds age. This steady renewal keeps the plant dense when the root ball stays evenly moist and the centre is kept clear of old frond bases.
'Vitale' carries a full fern shape in a manageable pot. Raised pots give the fronds space to arch over the rim while the centre stays visible for watering and grooming.
Keep repotting conservative. A pot that is only slightly larger than the root mass makes it easier to maintain the even moisture Boston ferns prefer while keeping the mix fresh and aerated.
ASPCA lists Boston fern as non-toxic to cats and dogs. Place the plant away from pets that chew fronds heavily, since repeated grazing can damage new growth and may cause mild digestive upset.
Nephrolepis means kidney scale, referring to the kidney-shaped indusia found in the genus. Exaltata means lofty or very tall, a species epithet connected to the larger growth potential of the wild fern. Nephrolepis exaltata is the accepted botanical species behind 'Vitale'.
Nephrolepis exaltata 'Vitale' develops bright green Boston fern fronds in a dense indoor plant with a rounded arching outline.
