‘Green Lady’ is a cultivated selection of this adaptable sword fern. Its dense crown and fresh to bright-green arching fronds were selected in horticulture rather than defining a separate wild form.

Care for healthy fronds

Grooming and propagation: Remove fully dead fronds at their base rather than trimming green tips. Divide a mature clump or separate young plants rooted on creeping runners to produce matching plants.

Watering the crown: Nephrolepis ‘Green Lady’ forms a dense base that can stay damp after the surface has lightened. Check the pot’s weight or moisture below the surface, then water the whole root ball before it dries completely and let it drain.

Light and settling in: Bright diffuse light supports a full crown of arching fronds. Gentle sun is acceptable after acclimation, but strong midday exposure can bleach the foliage.

• Limp yellow growth: A wet centre, sour odour or crown softness supports root oxygen loss. Allow drainage, clear decaying debris and replace broken-down substrate if it no longer admits air.
• Open new fronds: New growth becoming longer and less dense can reflect insufficient light. Increase bright diffuse light gradually and assess several later fronds rather than trimming the open ones as a cure.
• Sori or pests: Orderly sori beneath mature leaflets are normal. Fine stippling and webbing indicate mites, cotton indicates mealybugs and fixed bumps indicate scale. Inspect the crown and lower surfaces before applying a pest-labelled product.
