Nephrolepis exaltata ‘Fluffy Ruffles’ is a compact Boston fern cultivar prized for its dense rosettes of finely divided fronds with delicate, ruffled edges. Each frond is short, sword-shaped, and covered with soft, lace-like leaflets, creating a plush, textured look. Unlike many ferns, this selection keeps a tidy, upright habit and produces no messy spores, making it an excellent choice for indoor spaces.
With its rich green color and ornamental frill, this fern resembles a living cushion of layered foliage. Ideal for shelves, windowsills, or terrariums, it stays neat and manageable while bringing soft, vibrant greenery into your home.
This species originates from humid tropical forests of Central and South America, where it thrives under filtered light and steady moisture. The cultivar ‘Fluffy Ruffles’ has been selected for compact growth, making it perfect for indoor environments. It remains evergreen and long-lived when kept moist and warm, typically staying below 35 cm tall without requiring structural support.
This fern thrives in stable conditions with ample moisture and humidity. Occasional division during repotting promotes fresh growth. Mimic its native rainforest conditions – filtered light, constant moisture, and humid air – for best results indoors.
‘Fluffy Ruffles’ has earned the RHS Award of Garden Merit for its ornamental quality. Its tidy, sterile form and decorative ruffled foliage make it one of the most practical Boston fern cultivars for indoor living spaces.
The genus Nephrolepis comes from the Greek “nephros” (kidney) and “lepis” (scale), referring to kidney-shaped scales on the rhizomes. The species name exaltata means “elevated.” Originally described by Linnaeus as Polypodium exaltatum, it was reclassified by Heinrich Wilhelm Schott in 1834. The cultivar name reflects its densely curled fronds.
