Myrtillocactus geometrizans

Native range and uses in Mexico

Myrtillocactus geometrizans is a Mexican columnar cactus of desert and dry-shrubland vegetation. In the wild it develops from a single column into a blue-green, candelabra-shaped succulent tree several metres high.

Its dark red to blue-purple fruits have a history of local consumption in Mexico. Vigorous young plants are also valued in cactus nurseries as grafting stock.

Across its native range, the species is currently considered at low risk of extinction.

Light, drying and root care

Blue-stem light: The blue wax-coated column needs full sun or the brightest available position. Acclimate greenhouse-grown stems gradually to intense direct sun. Strong, even light maintains broad blue-green growth and close spacing between the spine-bearing points, called areoles, while one-sided light encourages leaning.

Water: From mid-spring through the warm growing season, water thoroughly and wait until the substrate has dried before watering again. Keep the plant almost dry during a cool, low-light rest. Never leave water standing around the roots.

Soil: Use a very open cactus mix with a large mineral component and an unobstructed drainage hole.

Feeding and repotting: Apply a low-nitrogen cactus feed sparingly during active growth only. Repot when roots have filled the container or the mix has compacted, rather than following a fixed calendar. Handle the stem as little as possible because rubbing can leave lasting marks in the blue waxy bloom. Preserve the normal dry interval and introduce full sun gradually.

When a blue columnar cactus is not thriving

• Marks in the blue surface: Fingerprints and rubbed patches can remove part of the waxy bloom and remain visibly different. Firm tissue beneath a smooth contact mark is not diseased; avoid polishing or repeatedly handling the stem.
• A pale narrow apex: A stretched top with increasing gaps between the spine-bearing points, called areoles, indicates insufficient light. Increase exposure gradually. Only later growth can regain the broader proportions, so do not cut or overfeed solely to correct the narrowed section.
• Hard brown tissue at the base: Dry, firm and stable corking can develop with age or old injury. Active rot becomes soft or translucent and continues beyond its starting point, sometimes with an unpleasant smell. Mark the edge and keep the cactus dry. If softness spreads beyond the mark, keep the plant separate and have an experienced grower assess the change before cutting.
• Bleached exposed side: A pale tan patch on the surface receiving the strongest sun usually follows a sudden light increase. Reduce peak exposure and acclimate the cactus more slowly; dead sunburned tissue will scar.
• Cotton, shields or bronzing: Mealybugs form irregular cotton, while scale forms removable attached shields. Both can hide where the ribs and areoles meet. Fine stippling or bronzing supports spider mites. Keep the cactus apart, inspect every groove and treat the pest found.
• Unexplained loss of vigour: Root mealybugs or damaged roots may cause stalled growth and shrinking without obvious insects above the soil. Check the root ball for white wax, soft roots and a wet centre before adding water or fertiliser.

Myrtillocactus geometrizans has sharp parts

• Keep this plant away from children and pets because its effects after chewing or swallowing are unclear.
• Sharp spines can puncture the mouth, eyes, skin or paws.
• Handle it carefully. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after a serious injury, especially to the eye.

Where does the name Myrtillocactus geometrizans come from?

Myrtillocactus combines a myrtle or bilberry reference with cactus, alluding to its berry-like fruits. Geometrizans refers to the regular geometric arrangement of the ribs.

Michelangelo Console established the genus Myrtillocactus in 1897 in Bollettino del Reale Orto Botanico di Palermo, volume 1, page 8.

Louis Karl Georg Pfeiffer first described it as Cereus geometrizans in 1837 in Enumeratio Diagnostica Cactearum, page 90; Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius had proposed that name. Michelangelo Console later placed it in Myrtillocactus as Myrtillocactus geometrizans in 1897 in Bollettino del Reale Orto Botanico di Palermo, volume 1, page 10.
