Myrtillocactus geometrizans

Botanical identity and natural origin of Myrtillocactus geometrizans

Myrtillocactus geometrizans is native across much of Mexico, where it grows in desert and dry shrubland. In Mexico it is also known as garambullo and can mature into a large tree-like cactus in its natural habitat.

Care for Myrtillocactus geometrizans

• Light: Give it full sun or the brightest direct light available indoors. Increase direct sun gradually after a period in lower light.
• Temperature and humidity: Keep temperatures around 18–30 °C and avoid prolonged temperatures below 10 °C. Aim for 40–50% humidity with good air movement. Keep the cactus warm while its stems are growing; keep the mix dry in cooler conditions.
• Water: During active growth, soak the cactus mix and leave it to dry completely before watering again. Once growth slows in cooler, darker conditions, water only sparingly.
• Potting mix: Use a well-draining cactus mix with plenty of pumice, grit or perlite.
• Feeding: Apply a low-nitrogen cactus fertiliser lightly while the stems are actively growing.
• Repotting: Repot when roots fill the container. Refresh compacted or broken-down mix, moving to a larger pot only if the roots also need more room. As the cactus becomes taller and branches, use a heavy pot for stability, with its size matched to the root system.
• Propagation: Grow the species from seed or take healthy stem cuttings. Allow the cut surface to dry and seal before placing a cutting in a freely draining mix.

Problems with Myrtillocactus geometrizans

• The stem base becomes soft, dark or sunken: Root or stem rot is developing after prolonged moisture. Cut back to firm healthy tissue with a clean tool, discard the removed rotten tissue, allow the cut surface to dry, and root the healthy cutting in fresh dry cactus mix.
• New growth becomes narrow and pale: The plant is receiving too little light. Move it towards stronger direct light gradually.
• Cottony clusters appear around areoles: Mealybugs are feeding on the stem. Move the cactus away from nearby plants, remove visible insects, and use a treatment labelled for indoor ornamental plants. Repeat only at the interval stated on the label.
• Raised scale insects, sticky residue or a black sooty coating appear: Scale insects can feed on this species, and their honeydew may lead to a black sooty coating. Move the cactus away from nearby plants, remove visible insects, and use a treatment labelled for indoor ornamental plants. Repeat only at the interval stated on the label.

Myrtillocactus geometrizans has sharp parts

• Keep this plant away from children and pets because its effects after chewing or swallowing are unclear.
• Sharp spines can puncture the mouth, eyes, skin or paws.
• Handle it carefully. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after a serious injury, especially to the eye.

Where does the name Myrtillocactus geometrizans come from?

Myrtillocactus combines a myrtle or bilberry reference with cactus, alluding to its berry-like fruits. Geometrizans refers to the regular geometric arrangement of the ribs.

Michelangelo Console established the genus Myrtillocactus in 1897 in Bollettino del Reale Orto Botanico di Palermo, volume 1, page 8.

Louis Karl Georg Pfeiffer first described it as Cereus geometrizans in 1837 in Enumeratio Diagnostica Cactearum, page 90; Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius had proposed that name. Michelangelo Console later placed it in Myrtillocactus as Myrtillocactus geometrizans in 1897 in Bollettino del Reale Orto Botanico di Palermo, volume 1, page 10.
