Origin and selection history of Muehlenbeckia complexa 'Spotlight'

Muehlenbeckia complexa occurs naturally from the Lord Howe Island region to New Zealand. It grows naturally as a woody vine around forest margins, open ground, rocky places and coastal habitats. 'Spotlight' was bred by Hans Peter Nielsen as a low, spreading selection with slender stems and variegated leaves.

• Light: Keep it in very bright light. Once acclimated, it can receive a few hours of gentle direct sun.
• Temperature: Keep temperatures around 16–20 °C. Avoid prolonged temperatures below -5 °C. Normal indoor temperatures are suitable. Growth slows in cooler conditions.
• Humidity: Aim for 50–60% humidity. Keep humidity around normal indoor levels and allow gentle air movement around the stems and leaves.
• Watering: Keep the root zone lightly moist by watering once the surface and very top layer begin to dry. Water thoroughly and drain the excess.
• Potting mix: Use a loose, well-drained houseplant mix with added bark, perlite or pumice.
• Feeding: Feed lightly with a balanced houseplant fertiliser while new leaves are developing.
• Repotting: Repot when roots fill the container, drainage becomes uneven or the mix has compacted. Keep drainage holes clear and refresh the mix as needed; use a slightly larger pot only when roots need more space.
• Propagation: Take cuttings from firm, healthy stems and root them.
• Pruning and training: Trim long or bare stems back to a leaf node for denser growth. The flexible stems can also be guided around a small support.

• Leaves become crisp and drop: The root ball may have dried too far or the plant may have been exposed to prolonged heat. Water thoroughly if the mix is dry. If heat is the cause, move the plant to a bright place with steadier temperatures.
• Leaves yellow while the mix stays wet: The roots are staying wet for too long. Let the mix dry, check that the drainage holes are open, and repot into a looser mix if the pot remains wet for long periods.
• Stems become long with wide gaps between leaves: Light is too low. Move the plant to a brighter position and shorten weak stems once stronger growth begins.

Muehlenbeckia honours the physician and botanist Heinrich Gustav Mühlenbeck. Complexa is Latin for “interwoven”, “entangled” or “complex”, describing the dense tangled branching.

Carl Daniel Friedrich Meisner established the genus Muehlenbeckia in 1841 in Plantarum Vascularium Genera, volume 1, page 316.

Allan Cunningham first described it as Polygonum complexum in 1838 in Annals of Natural History, volume 1, page 455. Carl Daniel Friedrich Meisner later placed it in Muehlenbeckia as Muehlenbeckia complexa in 1841 in Plantarum Vascularium Genera, volume 2, page 227.
