Albo Variegata is a white-variegated horticultural form of Monstera deliciosa. The plant trade still often uses “borsigiana”. Both Monstera borsigiana and Monstera deliciosa var. borsigiana are treated as synonyms of Monstera deliciosa.

The wild species is confined to the region from southern Mexico into Guatemala. There it climbs with aerial roots. Albo keeps that climbing growth habit, and its white-and-green shoot pattern is a cultivated characteristic of this horticultural form.

Indoor care for Monstera deliciosa Albo Variegata

• Keep a useful amount of green growth: Green leaf tissue makes most of the sugars that support the plant's growth. When pruning, avoid sacrificing healthy green sections simply to chase a whiter plant.
• Use bright, filtered light: Good light supports the green portions of the leaf, but white sectors can burn in strong sun. Introduce any direct exposure slowly and watch the newest foliage.
• Support the stem itself: Train the climbing stem against a rigid pole or board and fasten it loosely. Leave leaf stalks, aerial roots and unfurling leaves room to move.
• Keep the root zone open: Water thoroughly after the upper portion of the mix has dried and remove standing water from an outer pot. A coarse potting mix and a sensibly sized container reduce the chance of the roots staying wet for too long.
• Choose propagation material carefully: A cutting needs a viable node. Visible mixed colouring on the stem is useful when choosing a cutting for continued variegated growth; a leaf without a node cannot produce another vine.

Problems and solutions for Monstera deliciosa Albo Variegata

• New growth is coming through completely green: Look at the growing stem as well as the leaves. If mixed green-and-cream striping is still present around the next node, wait for more growth; if several nodes and the stem itself remain fully green, cutting back to the last mixed-colour node may allow a variegated bud another chance. Extra light will not add white pattern to an already green stem.
• A shoot keeps producing almost-white leaves: Very pale leaves make little food for the plant. Keep healthy green foliage in place and watch the next node. If successive leaves remain nearly white and the shoot weakens, cut back to a node with a more workable green-and-white balance. • White sectors turn crisp and brown: Match the repair to the event that preceded the damage. Reduce direct sun after scorch, rewet a badly dried root ball thoroughly, or flush the potting mix if browning appeared after heavy feeding. Brown white tissue will not turn pale again, so judge the correction by new growth.
• The plant droops in mix that stays wet: Stop watering and check drainage immediately. If the condition persists, inspect the roots and discard only parts that are soft, slimy, collapsing or rotten-smelling; healthy roots should be left in place. Monstera deliciosa: name and meaning

Monstera comes from Latin monstrum or monstrosus, words for something unusual or abnormally formed, referring to the striking holes and divisions in the leaves. The Latin epithet deliciosa means delicious, referring to the edible ripe fruit.
