Background of Monstera adansonii variegata

This is a cultivated variegated form of Monstera adansonii, with white-and-cream patterning maintained in cultivation.

Monstera adansonii is native across tropical America, including parts of Central America, the Caribbean and South America, and naturally grows as a climber with perforated leaves.

Care for Monstera adansonii variegata

Give the vine bright, indirect light so its green tissue can support growth, but protect white sectors from harsh direct sun. Train the nodes against a vertical support and fasten the stem loosely; established climbing growth can produce larger leaves with more and longer holes.

Use an airy, chunky aroid mix and water thoroughly after the upper portion has partly dried. Let the pot drain completely. Keep the plant warm with moderate humidity and airflow, and do not compensate for pale foliage with a constantly wet rootball.

Apply a balanced fertiliser at moderate strength while growth is active. When pruning or taking a cutting, choose node-bearing sections with healthy mixed green-and-pale growth and enough green tissue to sustain the new shoot.

Troubleshooting Monstera adansonii variegata

• Successive leaves become fully green: A single greener leaf is not necessarily permanent. If the shoot continues without pale pattern, cut back to the last healthy node that was producing mixed green-and-pale growth and allow a new bud to develop.
• Successive leaves become almost entirely white: Very pale shoots can weaken because they have little green tissue. If growth remains weak, shorten the vine to a healthy mixed node. Keep fertiliser and light at normal supportive levels; they do not restore missing green tissue.
• White areas turn brown: Hot direct sun, an unevenly dry rootball, dry heated air or fertiliser salts can damage pale tissue. Move the plant out of harsh sun or drying airflow, rewet the rootball evenly and flush the mix with plain water if salts are likely. • Yellowing with persistent wilt in wet mix: Stop watering until the rootball can drain and inspect roots if decline continues. Keep every firm root regardless of colour; remove only soft, hollow, slippery or foul-smelling tissue, then repot in fresh aerated substrate.

Monstera adansonii: where the name comes from

Monstera comes from Latin monstrum or monstrosus, words for something unusual or abnormally formed, referring to the striking holes and divisions in the leaves. Adansonii honours French naturalist Michel Adanson.
