Thick, angular stems carry opposite pairs of large leathery leaves marked by several pale veins running from base to tip. Long pink flower clusters arch out from this upright foliage and hang below it.
The broad pink elements surrounding each cluster are bracts, modified leaves that frame many smaller flowers. Within them, individual pink blooms remain clearly visible, each with fine projecting stamens at the centre. A mature specimen can carry several pendulous clusters at once beneath its substantial green canopy.
