Origin and background of Maranta leuconeura 'Light Veins' ('Fantasy')

‘Light Veins’ and ‘Fantasy’ are two names for the same dark-leaved selection of Maranta leuconeura. Both refer to its fine pale vein network.

Maranta leuconeura comes from the wet-tropical forests of central and eastern Brazil. In nature, creeping rhizomes keep the patterned leaves low over the forest floor. The named form retains this low growth and adds the selected pale vein pattern.

• Let movement normalise: After delivery, keep the plant warm and evenly moist while its flexible leaf joints resume their day-night rhythm. A raised evening canopy is not by itself a request for water.
• Light: Bright filtered light supports balanced compact growth. Protect the fine-veined leaves from direct hot sun and do not leave the plant in deep shade.
• Water: Water when the top layer begins to dry while the interior remains lightly damp. Drain completely and avoid both repeated collapse from drought and permanently saturated rhizomes.

• Humidity and temperature: Maintain stable warmth and moderate to high humidity. Let air circulate around the plant so damp leaves do not remain wet.
• Careful feeding: Supply dilute nutrients while new leaves are being produced. Remove only dead leaves and use divisions or cuttings with at least one node to retain the selected vein pattern.

Problems and how to solve them

• Fine light veins: The organised vein network belongs to ‘Light Veins’. Mite injury is different: pale stippling interrupts the leaf surface and may be accompanied by webbing.
• Leaves raised after dark: This is normal movement at the flexible leaf joints. Do not interpret the changed angle as wilt.
• Daytime curling: Check for dry substrate, direct heat, low humidity and roots that have declined in saturated mix. More water is only correct when the root ball is actually drying.
• Brown margins: Salts, fluoride, irregular moisture, strong feeding and root injury are common possibilities. Review the pattern and root condition before changing water quality.
• Soft yellow lower foliage: Wet medium plus soft leaves points to oxygen shortage. Empty standing water and let the top layer begin drying.
• Thrips or mealybugs: Silver scarring with black dots on emerging leaves suggests thrips; cottony clusters at nodes indicate mealybugs. Isolate and use pest-specific control.
• Spreading leaf spots: Brown or translucent lesions that continue enlarging suggest leaf-spot disease. Remove affected leaves and increase airflow so the canopy dries promptly.
