Across central and eastern Brazil, Maranta leuconeura occupies wet-tropical forest as a low rhizomatous plant close to the ground. Its broad leaves reorient each day on specialized swollen joints, the movement behind the common name prayer plant.

One of its best-known cultivated expressions has a strongly coloured red vein network. ‘Fascinator’, ‘Tricolor’ and ‘Red Stripe’ are long-established horticultural names for this same form, so the three names lead back to one familiar selection.

Moisture and leaf care for prayer plants

• After transport: Allow Maranta ‘Fascinator’ to regain its normal daily leaf movement in stable warmth before changing the pot or watering pattern.
• Light: Bright indirect or filtered light suits the red-veined foliage. Hard direct sun bleaches and burns the blades; insufficient light lengthens the stalks and weakens growth.
• Moisture: Water before the root ball dries completely, then let excess escape. The aim is even light moisture with oxygen around the rhizomes, not a permanently saturated pot.
• Water quality: If margins repeatedly brown despite correct moisture, use lower-mineral water and flush the substrate to reduce fluoride and soluble-salt accumulation.
• Root medium: Blend fine organic material with enough coarse particles to prevent compaction. As the rhizomes spread, favour container width over unnecessary depth.
• Temperature and humidity: Keep warm, stable and frost-free. Higher humidity helps new leaves open without developing dry edges, while mild air circulation keeps water from resting on the foliage.
• Upkeep: Feed at low strength during active growth. Cut fully dead leaves at the base and propagate by division or cuttings that include at least one node so new plants keep the same pattern.

Problems, causes and solutions

• Raised leaves at night: ‘Fascinator’ normally changes leaf angle from day to evening. Do not water solely because the canopy has lifted.
• Daytime rolling: Inspect for a dry root ball, hot direct sun, very dry air or roots damaged by saturation. Wilt alone cannot distinguish drought from root failure.
• Brown edges: Uneven watering, fluoride or other salts, strong feeding and injured roots are common causes. Use lower-mineral water and flush only when salt accumulation is supported.
• Red veins or novel mosaic: Stable red veins follow the cultivar pattern. Isolate a newly irregular mosaic if it appears with distorted growth, dead tissue, stunting or similar symptoms on nearby plants.
• Spreading leaf spots: Lesions that enlarge independently of the veins, especially damp-looking marks, point instead to bacterial or fungal damage. Remove severely affected leaves and prevent water from lingering on the foliage.
• Faded pattern or tan patches: Long pale leaf stalks indicate low light; sharply bleached areas indicate direct-sun injury. Correct the exposure and judge only subsequent leaves.
• Stippling, webbing or black specks: Spider mites create fine pale specks and webbing, while thrips scar new leaves and leave dark waste spots. Cottony masses at nodes indicate mealybugs.
• Yellow soft leaves in wet mix: Empty standing water and restore air around the rhizomes. More humidity will not correct roots that are suffocating.

Maranta commemorates Bartolomeo Maranta. Leuconeura combines Greek leukos, meaning white, with neuron, meaning nerve, and refers to pale venation.

Carl Linnaeus established the genus Maranta in 1753 in Species Plantarum, page 2; Charles Plumier had proposed the name.

Charles Jacques Édouard Morren first described Maranta leuconeura in 1874 in Annales de l’Horticulture Belge et Étrangère, volume 24, page 323.
