Leucostele terscheckii

Natural range and habitat of Leucostele terscheckii

Leucostele terscheckii occurs naturally from Bolivia into northwestern Argentina, where it grows as a succulent shrub or tree in desert and dry shrubland with strong sun, dry air and mineral soils that drain rapidly.

Care for Leucostele terscheckii

This columnar cactus becomes taller and heavier with age. Give it strong light and a very free-draining mineral mix.

• Container and repotting: Use a wide, heavy pot with a drainage hole. Increase pot size when roots fill the container and need more room. If drainage slows, refresh the mix; if the tall stem becomes unstable, use a heavier, stable pot sized to the roots.
• Light: Mature plants grow in full sun. Introduce direct sun gradually for young plants and newly moved plants.
• Humidity: Average room humidity around 40–50% is sufficient; keep the plant well ventilated.
• Watering: Soak the mix during growth, then wait until it is dry throughout before watering again. Wait longer between waterings during cool or dim periods.
• Potting mix: Use a gritty cactus mix with plenty of mineral material that drains quickly.
• Temperature: The plant grows comfortably at 18–32 °C and should not remain below 10 °C for long. Keep container plants frost-free. If the plant is kept cool, keep the mix dry.
• Feeding: Apply a light cactus fertiliser while new growth is developing at the tip.
• Propagation: Grow from seed, or root mature branch cuttings after the cut ends have dried and formed a callus.

Common issues with Leucostele terscheckii

• The base becomes soft and dark: Cold, prolonged wetness or root damage may have started rot. Cut away all soft or dark tissue with a clean tool until only firm healthy tissue remains and discard the rotten material. Let the cut surface form a callus before rooting the healthy upper section in fresh dry mineral mix.
• One side develops a pale or tan patch after stronger sun exposure: Sudden strong sun or heat has burned the stem. Move the plant out of intense midday sun and return it to stronger light gradually.
• The stem wrinkles after recent watering: Damaged roots may be stopping the plant from taking up water. Inspect the roots and stem base before watering again. If roots or the base are soft, dark or rotten, cut away all affected tissue with a clean tool, discard the rotten material and repot the plant or root the healthy section again in fresh dry mineral mix.
• Fresh growth at the tip becomes narrow and pale: Light levels are too low for sturdy growth. Increase light gradually while new growth is forming.

Leucostele terscheckii has sharp parts

• This plant is non-toxic to cats and dogs. Its effects on people are unclear.
• Sharp spines can puncture the mouth, eyes, skin or paws.
• Handle it carefully. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after a serious injury, especially to the eye.

Leucostele terscheckii: name and meaning

Leucostele combines Greek leukos, “white”, and stēlē, “column”. Terscheckii honours Carl Adolph Terscheck, a German horticulturist associated with the Dresden court gardens.

Curt Backeberg established the genus Leucostele in 1953 in Kakteen und andere Sukkulenten, volume 4, page 40.

Louis Karl Georg Pfeiffer first described it as Cereus terscheckii in 1837 in Allgemeine Gartenzeitung, volume 5, page 370; Joseph Julien Ghislain Parmentier had proposed that name. Boris Oliver Schlumpberger later placed it in Leucostele as Leucostele terscheckii in 2012 in Cactaceae Systematics Initiatives, volume 28, page 29.
