Lava Rock Granules for mineral structure and weight
Lava Rock Granules are crushed volcanic mineral granules for substrates that need more drainage, weight and long-lasting structure. This 1 liter pack is useful for small-batch mixing, mineral top dressing and targeted adjustments when a potting mix feels too light, too soft or too compact.
Use this lava grit as a physical ingredient, not as plant food or complete potting soil. Mixed through suitable substrates, it helps create small air spaces, reduces compaction and supports steadier water movement through the root zone. It sits close to pumice and mineral grit in practical use, but is usually heavier and less floaty than perlite.
Use lava where structure and stability matter
- Cacti and succulents: adds mineral structure and weight to fast-draining blends.
- Bonsai substrates: helps keep shallow containers stable as part of an open, durable mix.
- Chunky houseplant mixes: useful when bark, coir or ready-made blends need more structure and less compaction.
- Mineral top dressing: creates a cleaner surface and reduces splash when watering.
- Top-heavy pots: adds stability where very lightweight ingredients can make planters feel unbalanced.
Mix through the substrate or use as a clean top layer
Mix them evenly into substrate instead of placing a thick drainage layer at the bottom of the pot. For dry-loving plants, combine lava granules with cactus mix, pumice, mineral grit or other fast-draining components. For foliage plants, use a smaller amount alongside coco coir, bark, perlite or a balanced houseplant mix when extra drainage and weight are needed.
- Before use: rinse thoroughly to remove loose dust.
- For fine roots: avoid dusty or oversized particles that create uneven spaces around the root zone.
- For heavy containers: check total pot weight before using large amounts in ceramic or oversized planters.
- For mineral setups: use only when the granules are clean, stable and suited to your growing method.
Expect weight, texture and slower breakdown
Lava granules improve structure and drainage, but they do not fertilise plants, prevent pests or fix root problems caused by unsuitable watering. They work best when particle size, pot choice and the rest of the mix match the plant. Add this 1 liter pack when you want a heavier, more stable mineral ingredient for custom substrate blends.
Compare Lava Rock Granules with pumice, perlite, sand and expanded clay in the growing media collection.
