Kleinia cephalophora

Natural range and habitat of Kleinia cephalophora

Its native range extends across southern Namibia and South Africa's Northern Cape, including the Richtersveld, Bushmanland and Namaqualand. It grows on rocky slopes in dry country where most rain falls in the cooler months, often around 600–800 m above sea level.

Growing Kleinia cephalophora in containers

• Light: Use full sun or very bright filtered light for compact, well-coloured growth.
• Temperature: Keep temperatures around 15–25 °C. Shield it from sustained cold below 10 °C. Frost-free conditions suit the plant, with some airflow around it.
• Humidity: Aim for 40–50% humidity. Normal indoor humidity is fine.
• Water: Water while new growth is appearing in cooler conditions, letting the mix dry between waterings. During the warmer slowdown, water less often and keep the mix much drier.
• Potting mix: Use a gritty, mineral-rich succulent mix that drains quickly.
• Feeding: For Kleinia cephalophora, use a dilute cactus or succulent fertiliser during active growth, then pause feeding when the plant is resting.
• Repotting: Repot when roots are crowded. If the gritty mix has compacted and drains more slowly, replace it; use a larger pot only when the roots need the space.
• Propagation: Take healthy stem cuttings and let the cut ends dry and seal before placing them in a gritty, fast-draining mix. Seed is another propagation option.

Troubleshooting Kleinia cephalophora Through the Year

• Stems turn soft or see-through: If the mix stays wet when growth has slowed in warmer conditions, rot can develop. Use a clean disinfected tool to cut away the rot until only firm healthy tissue remains. After cutting, discard all damaged parts and replant healthy sections in fresh gritty succulent mix.
• Growth stretches and loses its compact shape: Long, stretched stems usually mean the position is too dim. Use direct sun or much brighter filtered light.
• Leaves stay deeply wrinkled while the plant is growing: The leaves can stay deeply wrinkled when the plant is too dry. Once the mix is dry, water thoroughly and let the pot drain.

Keep Kleinia cephalophora away from children and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its effects after chewing or swallowing are unclear, and plant material can still cause an upset stomach.
• Contact a veterinarian or medical professional if symptoms develop or do not settle.

How the name Kleinia cephalophora came about

Kleinia honours the German naturalist Jacob Theodor Klein. The epithet cephalophora combines Greek roots meaning head and bearing and refers to the prominent flower head.

Philip Miller established the genus Kleinia in 1754 in The Gardeners Dictionary Abridged, fourth edition.

Robert Harold Compton first described Kleinia cephalophora in 1949 in Journal of South African Botany, volume 15, page 105.
