Hoya âLai Chauâ is a striking locality-tagged Hoya from northern Vietnam, celebrated for its silver-flecked leaves, compact vines, and sweetly scented blooms.
Named after Lai Châu Province, this semi-succulent climber blends texture, subtle variegation, and understated beauty â ideal for collectors who appreciate restrained elegance over flashy foliage. Hoya âLai Chauâ is shipped as a 2â3 cm plug, approximately 10 cm tall, and establishes quickly under bright, stable conditions.
Bright, indirect light is ideal. Morning or late-afternoon sun enhances leaf texture and silver splash without causing burn.
Let the top 2â3 cm of substrate dry out between waterings. Semi-succulent foliage stores water, so err slightly on the dry side instead of keeping it constantly moist.
Prefers 50â70 %. Adapts to normal household humidity if the air is not stagnant. Occasional misting or good airflow helps reduce pest pressure.
Thrives at 20â30 °C. Avoid cold drafts or temperatures below 15 °C. Stable warmth keeps growth compact and steady.
Use a coarse, well-aerated mix â orchid bark, perlite, and coco fibre work very well. It also performs reliably in semi-hydro or mineral substrates, provided roots stay oxygenated.
Feed lightly but consistently with a balanced liquid fertiliser during active growth. Excess nutrients can reduce clarity of leaf patterning and texture.
Repot only when clearly rootbound or when the substrate has broken down. Hoyas prefer snug pots and stable root conditions.
Root 2-node cuttings in moist moss, perlite, or semi-hydro media. Maintain warmth and moderate humidity for reliable rooting.
Hoya âLai Chauâ has a clean, architectural quality that suits both modern minimalist spaces and dense foliage displays. Upright-to-trailing growth works well on trellises, hanging planters, or slender climbing supports.
Silvered leaves reflect light beautifully against matte backgrounds, making an elegant contrast to darker or matte-leaf Hoyas. For a textured display, pair it with Hoya krohniana âEskimoâ or Hoya sigillatis, which share a similar sheen and growth speed but differ in pattern. Compact, disciplined growth also suits terrariums or greenhouse cabinets where space is limited.
The trade name âLai Chauâ refers directly to Lai Châu, a mountainous province in northwestern Vietnam near the Chinese and Lao borders.
It reflects geographic origin rather than a cultivar name. Silver-flecked foliage inspired frequent use of labels like âSplashâ in trade to mark clones with stronger pigmentation contrast.
Elegant, compact, and distinctly silver-flecked, Hoya âLai Chauâ brings texture and character to any collection.
Order your Hoya âLai Chauâ today and enjoy the refined charm of one of Vietnamâs most graceful Hoya discoveries.
