Hoya sp. Lai Chau

Origin and identity of Hoya sp. Lai Chau

Hoya sp. Lai Chau comes from Lai Châu in northern Vietnam. Its species identity and exact collection point within Lai Châu are still uncertain.

Care for Hoya sp. Lai Chau

Maturing foliage: Later leaves become heavier than juvenile ones. Provide a firm support before the runner carries several thick oval leaves.

Light: Keep the vine near bright indirect light throughout the day, especially while the broad silver-marked leaves are still soft. After acclimation, brief morning sun is suitable; keep the leaves away from hot glass and abrupt midday exposure.

Watering and roots: Water only after a clear drying interval through the upper part of the root ball. Let water drain at once and empty any water beneath the inner pot.

Potting mix: Use an airy bark-based mix with porous mineral material. Use a mix that sheds surplus water freely but does not leave the roots of Hoya sp. Lai Chau completely dry immediately after watering.

Temperature and airflow: Keep temperatures around 16–24 °C, with prolonged cold below 10 °C avoided. Maintain warm, even room conditions with moderate humidity and gentle airflow, and let the foliage dry promptly after watering.

Feeding: While new growth is developing, apply orchid fertiliser at a moderate rate; feed less once growth pauses.

Repotting: Repot when roots fill the container or the mix becomes compacted or slow to drain. Refresh deteriorated mix in the same pot when the roots still fit; use a slightly larger pot only when they need more space.

Propagation: Take a healthy cutting with a node and root it in lightly moist, freely aerated propagation mix.

Common issues with Hoya sp. Lai Chau

• The pot smells sour and the thick silver-flecked leaves begin to soften: Breakdown of the mix is limiting oxygen around the roots. Unpot the plant and inspect the roots immediately. Discard all soft roots, clean the container and repot the firm root system in a coarse mix with open air spaces. Save a healthy node cutting before soft tissue spreads along the stem.
• The side facing the window develops bleached dry marks: The pale tissue overheated while the rest of the leaf remained firm. Filter the strongest sun and keep the watering cycle consistent while the next leaf develops.
• A new thick silver-flecked blade hardens with a fold from the trellis: The heavy new leaf shifted against the trellis before its petiole hardened. Set the pot beside a rigid trellis and tie the thick stem below the next leaf, leaving the petiole free. Fasten only the stem and keep ties off petioles and blades. Leave a firm bend untouched. Shorten the runner only when the damaged section splits or begins to decay.
• The growing runner pauses after producing one heavy leaf: The support shifted or the roots could not supply enough moisture while the heavy leaf was expanding. Secure the frame, check the root ball and keep the tip in bright filtered light. Return to light feeding after the runner opens a healthy new leaf. Leave the growing point in place unless the tissue clearly dies.
