Hoya globulifera

Botanical identity and natural origin of Hoya globulifera

Hoya globulifera is native to New Guinea, where it grows in wet tropical habitat.

Indoor care for Hoya globulifera

Give Hoya globulifera a trellis in bright filtered light, sheltered from hot sun. Aim for 60–80% humidity, away from cold draughts, with gentle airflow. Hold temperatures near 16–24 °C and protect the plant from prolonged conditions under 10 °C for everyday care.

In airy, freely draining mix, water when the pot feels lighter and the deeper mix remains lightly moist. Soak the whole root ball and drain fully. When growth slows, allow the mix to become fairly dry between waterings without drying it completely.

fertilise with houseplant fertiliser at moderate strength during active growth and reduce applications when the plant slows down. When growth stops, suspend further feeding. Move up one pot size once roots crowd the container.

Take a healthy one- or two-node section from the stem with a clean cutting tool. Remove the lower leaves and place a leafless node in lightly moist, loosely packed sphagnum in a pot with drainage holes. Leave the remaining leaves above the moss surface. Provide it with warmth, indirect light and humid air while it establishes. Once the cutting has a healthy root system, transfer it to a small pot of airy mix.

Solving common issues with Hoya globulifera

• Leaves become limp or shrunken: The puckered surface is normal, and the leaves should still feel firm. Check whether the mix around the roots is dry. If the root ball is dry, water thoroughly and drain. If the leaves still wilt after watering, inspect the roots. Avoid repeated watering while the roots are still wet.
• Yellowing or increasing wilting with wet mix: Persistent wetness can damage roots. Drain trapped water and inspect roots if decline continues. If you find a small amount of root rot, use a clean, disinfected tool to cut the soft roots back to firm, healthy tissue. Throw away the rotten roots and old mix. Repot in fresh, airy mix, using a clean pot just large enough for the roots that remain. The pot must have drainage holes. If decay is widespread, save only healthy stem cuttings. Discard the plant if no healthy stems remain, and disinfect your tools afterwards.
• Cottony insects in sheltered leaf joints: Confirm mealybugs beneath the wax and isolate the plant. Remove visible insects with a damp swab or tweezers. Inspect sheltered leaf joints, stems, the pot and any support weekly, removing any mealybugs you find until none remain. If mealybugs persist, use a product approved for home use against mealybugs on indoor ornamental plants in your country. Follow the label for how much to use, where to apply it, when to repeat treatment and all safety precautions.

Hoya globulifera is non-toxic to people and pets

• This plant is non-toxic to people, cats and dogs.
• Chewing a large amount can still cause an upset stomach.
• If a large amount is eaten and symptoms continue, contact a veterinarian or medical professional.

How the name Hoya globulifera came about

Hoya honours the English gardener Thomas Hoy. Globulifera combines the Latin globulus, a small sphere, with -fera, bearing.

Robert Brown established the genus Hoya in 1810 in Prodromus Florae Novae Hollandiae, page 459.

Carl Ludwig Blume first described Hoya globulifera in 1849 in Museum Botanicum, volume 1, page 44.
