Hoya deykei

A Sumatran wet-forest Hoya: Hoya deykei

Hoya deykei is native to Sumatra and grows in wet tropical habitat. In cultivation it develops as a broad-leaved climbing Hoya.

Care for Hoya deykei

• Support and leaf space: Choose a rigid frame with enough width for mature leaves. Never tie a petiole or press a soft leaf against the frame.
• Light around the foliage: Give the vine abundant filtered light throughout the day. Keep broad large thick heart-shaped foliage away from sun-warmed windows.
• Watering: Let the pot lighten between waterings, then wet all parts of the root ball. Check the roots whenever the middle of the pot remains cold and wet, even if the large leaves still feel firm.
• Potting mix: Choose an open substrate that can anchor a substantial root ball. Insert the frame before potting and settle the coarse mix around it without packing.
• Heavy hearts: The broad heart-based leaves become heavy. Support the stem early and keep the soft new blade clear of the trellis.
• Temperature and airflow: Use an evenly warm position where air can move gently. Broad leaves need open air and should not be enclosed in persistently humid conditions.
• Feeding: Apply a quarter-strength complete fertiliser every third or fourth watering while a new leaf is expanding. Pause when no new root, leaf or runner is developing.
• Flowering and pruning: Keep old peduncles clear of ties and leave them on the vine, as established spurs can produce another umbel.

Hoya deykei and pet safety

Hoya deykei is treated as non-toxic to cats and dogs. Chewing leaves or stems can still cause temporary drooling, vomiting or diarrhoea. Keep the plant out of reach of pets that chew foliage, and contact a veterinarian if symptoms are severe or persistent.

Hoya deykei honours Deyke van Donkelaar of the Netherlands. The genus name Hoya commemorates Thomas Hoy, head gardener at Syon House.
