Hoya coriacea 'Silver' is a rare and highly decorative cultivar of Hoya coriacea Blume, a tropical climbing species native to Southeast Asia. This form stands out for its broad, silver-dusted leaves speckled with deep green, bringing a modern, textured look to any indoor jungle. Though its exact origin is unclear, ‘Silver’ appears to be a stable horticultural selection, not a wild variant.
Hoya coriacea was first described by botanist Carl Ludwig Blume in 1826 in Bijdragen tot de flora van Nederlandsch Indië. The species is native to tropical forests of Southeast Asia, where it grows epiphytically on trees, absorbing moisture from the air and decaying matter. The ‘Silver’ cultivar is not known from wild populations and likely originated in cultivation through foliar mutation selection.
Note:Hoya coriacea has occasionally been misidentified in trade as Hoya diversifolia, though they are taxonomically distinct.
The genus Hoya is named in honor of 18th-century gardener Thomas Hoy. The species name “coriacea” is Latin for “leathery” – referencing the plant’s thick, tough leaves that withstand fluctuations in moisture and temperature better than thinner-foliaged Hoyas.
Looking for rare foliage that’s both tough and beautiful? Hoya coriacea 'Silver' combines botanical resilience with tropical elegance. Order now from Foliage Factory and enjoy low-maintenance impact all year round.
