Goeppertia rufibarba (Fenzl) Borchs. and S.Suárez, published in Syst. Bot. Monogr. 92: 36 (2012). Basionym: Calathea rufibarba Fenzl, Ann. Wien. Mus. 1: 108 (1836).
This cultivar is based on Goeppertia rufibarba, originally found in the understories of Brazil’s humid rainforests. These regions provide warm, shaded environments with consistent rainfall above 1800 mm and humidity often over 70%. Indoors, 'Tropistar' typically grows to 60 – 70 cm tall and wide, forming a full clump from underground rhizomes. It is a moderate grower with upright, fountain-like structure. Like other Goeppertia species, it is considered non-toxic and pet-safe, making it a suitable choice for households with animals.
'Tropistar' prefers stability – changes in watering, light, or temperature can affect growth quickly. Its velvety undersides are delicate, so avoid rubbing or misting the leaves directly. Use a tray humidifier or room humidifier to support consistent conditions. Remember: this plant evolved in shaded, humid forest environments. Mimicking that at home – moist air, gentle light, and steady warmth – will keep it thriving long-term.
The genus Goeppertia is named after botanist Heinrich Göppert. The species name rufibarba comes from Latin: “rufus” meaning reddish and “barba” meaning beard – referring to the reddish, hairy stems and leaf undersides that distinguish this species from others.
Bring home velvety, cascading foliage with vibrant contrasts. Buy now and experience the soft elegance of Goeppertia 'Tropistar' in your indoor jungle.
