Goeppertia roseopicta is native to the wet tropics of western South America, including western Brazil.

Caring for Goeppertia roseopicta ‘Silvia’

• Water: Keep the root ball consistently moist and let excess water drain freely. When lower light or cooler conditions slow growth, let the surface dry slightly before rewatering.
• Humidity: Aim for high humidity to help new leaves open smoothly and reduce dry edges.
• Temperature: Keep the room at roughly 16–21 °C and protect the plant from cold draughts or abrupt temperature changes.
• Light: Choose bright indirect or filtered light. Avoid intense direct sun, which can leave washed-out or scorched patches on the broad leaves.
• Potting mix: Use an airy, moisture-retentive potting mix in a freely draining pot.
• Repotting: Repot when the roots are crowded or the mix has broken down. If lower light or cooler conditions have slowed growth, wait for active growth before repotting unless drainage has failed or the roots are unhealthy.
• Feeding: Feed lightly with a balanced houseplant fertiliser while new leaves are growing, following the label, and reduce feeding when growth slows.

Troubleshooting Goeppertia roseopicta ‘Silvia’

• Pale or washed-out patches: Strong direct sun can bleach the leaf surface. Move the plant into filtered light. Existing damage will remain visible. Healthy new leaves should develop normally.
• Brown tips or margins: Low humidity, uneven watering and minerals in tap water can all contribute. Improve humidity and watering consistency; use rainwater or another low-mineral source if new tips continue to burn.
• Soft yellowing leaves with persistently wet mix: The mix may be holding too much water and the roots may be starting to rot. Stop watering until the mix has drained; if roots are brown, soft and foul-smelling, remove the rotten roots with clean, disinfected scissors. Discard the rotten roots and repot in fresh, well-aerated potting mix.
• Small pale speckles or fine webbing: Check the undersides for spider mites. Isolate the plant and use a houseplant mite treatment, repeating it at the interval on the label.
• New leaves open with silvery scars: Inspect rolled growth for thrips. Keep the plant separate and use a houseplant product labelled for thrips, repeating the treatment as directed on the label.

How did the name change from Calathea roseopicta to Goeppertia roseopicta?

The genus name Goeppertia honours Heinrich Göppert. The epithet roseopicta means rose-painted.

Christian Gottfried Daniel Nees von Esenbeck established the genus Goeppertia in 1831 in Linnaea, volume 6, page 337.

Charles Lemaire first described it as Maranta roseopicta in 1866 in Annales de l’Horticulture Belge et Étrangère, volume 16, page 202; Jean Jules Linden had proposed that name. Finn Borchsenius and Luz Stella Suárez later placed it in Goeppertia as Goeppertia roseopicta in 2012 in Systematic Botany, volume 37, page 634.

The familiar former name is Calathea roseopicta. Finn Borchsenius, Luz Stella Suárez and Linda M. Prince restored Goeppertia for this group in 2012 in Systematic Botany, volume 37.
