Origin and horticultural background of Goeppertia roseopicta ‘Angela’

Goeppertia roseopicta is native to the wet tropics of western South America, including western Brazil.

Magdalena J. M. van Rijn discovered ‘Angela’ in Schipluiden, the Netherlands, in 1989.

How to care for Goeppertia roseopicta ‘Angela’

• Water: Keep the root ball evenly moist while new leaves are developing. Water thoroughly once the surface starts to dry, let excess water drain and water less often when lower light or cooler conditions slow water use.
• Light: Give bright filtered or indirect light. Protect the broad leaves from strong direct sun, which can bleach or scorch the pattern.
• Humidity: High humidity helps new leaves open smoothly and reduces dry edges.
• Temperature: Keep the room around 16–21 °C with little fluctuation and shield the plant from cold draughts.
• Potting mix: Use an airy, moisture-retentive houseplant mix that drains freely.
• Repotting: Repot when roots fill the pot or the mix has compacted, moving up only slightly in pot size.
• Feeding: Use a balanced houseplant fertiliser lightly while new leaves are appearing, following the label, and reduce feeding when growth slows.
• Leaf care: Wipe the smooth leaves gently with a damp cloth and avoid leaf-shine products.

Common problems with Goeppertia roseopicta ‘Angela’

• Brown, crisp tips: Dry air, uneven watering or mineral build-up are common causes. Raise humidity, keep moisture more consistent and, if the problem continues, try rainwater or another low-mineral water source.
• Leaves stay tightly rolled through the day: The root ball may be too dry or the plant may be too cold. Check moisture and temperature first; water thoroughly only if the mix is genuinely drying out.
• Pale or bleached patches: Strong direct sun can damage the leaf surface. Move the plant back from the glass or filter the light. The damaged patch will remain. Healthy new growth should emerge normally.
• Fine speckling or webbing: Check leaf undersides for spider mites. Isolate the plant, then treat with a houseplant product labelled for spider mites. Repeat as directed on the label.
• Several leaves yellow while the mix stays wet: The mix may be staying too wet and the roots may be starting to rot. Let excess water drain and wait longer before watering again. If roots become soft, brown or foul-smelling, trim away the rotten parts with clean, disinfected scissors. Discard the removed material and repot the healthy roots in fresh potting mix that drains freely.

Calathea roseopicta and Goeppertia roseopicta: why did the name change?

The genus name Goeppertia honours Heinrich Göppert. The epithet roseopicta means rose-painted.

Christian Gottfried Daniel Nees von Esenbeck established the genus Goeppertia in 1831 in Linnaea, volume 6, page 337.

Charles Lemaire first described it as Maranta roseopicta in 1866 in Annales de l’Horticulture Belge et Étrangère, volume 16, page 202; Jean Jules Linden had proposed that name. Finn Borchsenius and Luz Stella Suárez later placed it in Goeppertia as Goeppertia roseopicta in 2012 in Systematic Botany, volume 37, page 634.

The familiar former name is Calathea roseopicta. Finn Borchsenius, Luz Stella Suárez and Linda M. Prince restored Goeppertia for this group in 2012 in Systematic Botany, volume 37.
