Goeppertia dressleri is native from Panama into north-western Colombia, where it grows in wet tropical habitat. ‘Helen Kennedy’ is a named cultivar of the species.

Caring for ‘Helen Kennedy’

• Humidity: High humidity suits the broad foliage, especially while large new leaves are unfurling. Dry heated air can leave the leaf edges brown or crisp.
• Water: Keep the root ball lightly moist and let excess water drain freely. Water as the surface begins to dry while the deeper root ball remains lightly moist.
• Light: Place the plant in medium to bright indirect light or partial shade. Strong direct sun can mark the broad leaves.
• Temperature: Keep it at 16 °C or warmer in a consistently warm room. Cold draughts and abrupt changes can affect new leaves.
• Potting mix: Use a rich, airy mix that holds moisture evenly, drains freely and stays loose around the roots.
• Feeding: Give a balanced fertiliser about monthly while new leaves are appearing, following the label. If the plant stops producing new leaves, pause feeding until fresh growth returns.
• Repotting: Repot after the roots have filled the pot, preferably while fresh leaves are developing. A large, established clump can be divided while fresh growth is active.
• Leaf cleaning: Wipe broad leaves gently when dusty, using plain water or a soft damp cloth.

Troubleshooting ‘Helen Kennedy’

• Dry, brittle leaf edges: Low humidity or a root ball that dries too far are common causes. Increase humidity and make watering more consistent.
• New leaves crease or fail to open fully: Dry air or uneven moisture can stop new leaves from opening properly. Correct both and let the new leaf open naturally.
• Fine pale dots: Check the undersides for spider mites, particularly if the room is dry. Isolate the plant and rinse the leaves thoroughly. If a treatment is needed, choose one labelled for spider mites and follow the repeat interval on the label.
• Lower leaves turn yellow: If the pot stays heavy and wet for a long time, check drainage and root health. If rot is present, prune soft dark roots back to firm, healthy tissue using cleaned, disinfected tools. Discard the diseased roots and repot the remaining healthy plant into fresh airy mix.

How did the name change from Calathea dressleri to Goeppertia dressleri?

The genus name Goeppertia honours Heinrich Göppert. The epithet dressleri honours the American botanist Robert L. Dressler.

Christian Gottfried Daniel Nees von Esenbeck established the genus Goeppertia in 1831 in Linnaea, volume 6, page 337.

Helen Kennedy first described it as Calathea dressleri in 1973 in Annals of the Missouri Botanical Garden, volume 60, page 414. Finn Borchsenius and Luz Stella Suárez later placed it in Goeppertia as Goeppertia dressleri in 2012 in Systematic Botany, volume 37, page 630.

The familiar former name is Calathea dressleri. Finn Borchsenius, Luz Stella Suárez and Linda M. Prince restored Goeppertia for this group in 2012 in Systematic Botany, volume 37.
